All of those lucky WWDC attendees should be arriving home soon and installing their Tiger previews while the rest of us are anxiously awaiting them to break their NDAs so I though we should have a single unified thread for reports of people who have actually used the beast.

Just a preemptive effort to prevent a repeat of the five threads already in existence to discuss the pre-keynote debate, the keynote itself, and the Tiger web pages on Apple's site.

So let's hear it! How do the new features really work? What are the other 140 new features? Is it snappy?

I'm guessing the first interface happens when you select 'Show all' from the second interface.

I'm hoping to have a report by late this evening. I won't be installing on the G5, but I will put it on my PBg4.

One of my big questions is what happened to Fast User Switching? Did it move over to the Apple menu?

I want to know what exactly the "NEW" .mac syncs. I think it might be a little misleading. I don't think it syncs any files like I first thought. In the screenshot on Apple's website it said "Desktop Pictures and Screensavers" and then I thought, "Sweet, when I add a new Desktop Pic to one computer, it'll automatically sync the file to the Desktop Pictures folder of the second computer", but then I noticed in faint writing to the right of it "Settings", so all I think it does is sync preferences.

Probably the biggest thing it appears it will do in Tiger vs. now is give the devs a way of tying their apps into iSync. Right now, they can't.

For anyone who installs it: Can you record a movie of what happens when you flip a widget over to change settings 'on the back'?

Macrumors has a video on their home page.

You can also see the flip animation when Jobs demos Dashboard on the WWDC stream (about 1:20). Cute.

(Boy, the developers sure didn't seem all too happy, or comfortable, when they saw Dashboard... and with good reason. It was like Jobs cheerfully announcing that they knocked someone from the audience over the head, went through their pockets, and dumped the body off outside the convention center.)

The "ripple" effect looks quite ridiculous and doesn't seem to make much sense. I was expecting a much smaller ripple, I kind of "ripple in" effect. The widget flip over feature on the other hand looks very slick Looks like they beat Sun (?) to the punch.

Yeah, I got the same impression. Not the proudest moment for Apple (just like Watson last year).

To those who are scared of breaking NDEs, just say "I saw it running on a developer's Mac and played around with it".
.....because the truth lies elsewhere....

I didn't see Dashboard as a straight rip-off. It was an idea that has been around a while that Apple took and made much better. I don't like Konfabulator b/c it takes up too much space and can be very intrusive on a small screen, like my 12" PB. The expose-like feature allows that crap to get out of my way when I don't need to be looking at it. Hopefully the widgets don't take up background CPU cycles like the Konfabulator widgets do (or at least did).

One thing I would like to know about Safari RSS is, if it has a back and forward contextual menu item.

According to these screenshots, which show a 900MHz G3 in the "About this Mac" window, Tiger should run fine on G3-equipped systems.

I'm curious:

- if there's a built-in hot key for hitting the Spotlight search field in the menu bar.
- about early signs of iPhoto tapping into CoreImage.
- any adjustments to corner sensitivity in Expos.
- about any improvements to FontBook.

Also, any reports from someone at WWDC? Surely there's a demo machine set up with the developer preview release of Tiger there.

Well actually, unlike the difference between say 10.3.3 and 10.3.4, I would personally like to know if the shift from 10.3 to 10.4 is indeed any.. faster..

I imagine it's marginally faster, but the major speedup in 10.3 was mainly in response to all of the flak they got.

The changes to XCode/gcc especially with respect to the G5 should make everything somewhat snappier.

This was probably done because it's now so stupidly easy for 3rd-party developers to make a movie player app in 10.4, that the Mac market would be flooded with freeware movie player apps that do fullscreen.

It doesn't change the FS itself, it's still HFS+. The metainfo is stored in a database of some sort. You can upgrade a Panther volume.

Hmmm. Hadn't seen that. I was actually wondering what became of the genius from Be they hired. I was expecting a rewrite of the file system under that guy's direction, but Apple may have decided a lower-key metadata upgrade (i.e. Spotlight) was all that was necessary. I have to say, Spotlight looks very good. Didn't Steve say we wouldn't need the Finder anymore?

What about flipping stickies over and ripples?
Do you need a modern graphics card for that?

ie. Will it work with a Q-Extreme only card, but use the CPU instead of the GPU.

If you want to have that in Panther, just use the new RealPlayer 10 for Mac. It can display ALL Quicktime movies (it uses Quicktime to decode them) and it can present them full-screen.

Another way is to use AppleScript. Open the movie you want to see with Quicktime Player, start playback and run the following script:

tell application "Quicktime Player" to present movie 1

This will work without Quicktime Pro. However, RealPlayer is much easier to use.

Not to mention that the forum rules also do not allow help in using pirated software either.
