Microsoft Office Lens for iOS, Android scans documents, whiteboards
Microsoft is making an Office app it released last year for Windows Phone available to iOS and Android users. Office Lens is an imaging app that effectively turns a smartphone into a scanner, allowing users to electronically keep track of receipts, forms, letters, and other paperwork using their device's camera, storing it on Microsoft's OneNote and OneDrive cloud services for later retrieval.
A photograph of the document is taken by the app, which then automatically detects the corners of the page, crops the image, and enhances the image to make it more easily readable. It is also able to identify printed text using optical character recognition, making it easier to generate contacts from business cards and for later searching via keyword. The whiteboard mode performs a similar task, straightening the image and removing any shadows, lights, or discoloring, leaving just the information drawn on the board.
The images can be converted into Word documents for simple editing, as well as a PowerPoint presentation or as PDF files. The resulting document can then be shared via OneNote or OneDrive, or exported for editing in another application.
Office Lens is available to download now on iOS as a free app, optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. While the Android version has not yet been released, Microsoft is making it available as a preview, before it goes live on Google Play.
