Ok so I just got out of the hospital the other day. Yay for me wifey gave the goahead for a new ipod touch. I got a refurb from Apple, but I don't know squat about the new firmwares and such. I've been searching and reading and just have a few questions.

Can I upgrade the firmware on the ipod touch to the newest one?
What is the newest firmware version?
Do I need to jailbreak my ipod touch?
What does the jailbreak do for the ipod touch?
I'm looking at dot tunes to stream my library on my mac to my ipod, do I need to jailbreak my ipod to do this?

any other advice you guys think might be relevant would be gladly had.

Thanks,
Bishop
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Yes

What is the newest firmware version?
1.1.4, 2.0 is out in June

Do I need to jailbreak my ipod touch?
No you don't NEED to, but you can if you want, and to be honest I'd hang on until June for the App Store in v2.0 to see if you still want the jailbreak.

What does the jailbreak do for the ipod touch?
Lets you install non Apple applications.

I'm looking at dot tunes to stream my library on my mac to my ipod, do I need to jailbreak my ipod to do this?
No - see here for starters Dot.Tunes

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Yeah, upgrade to the latest firmware now with iTunes and wait for 2.0 in June.

Also,

If you want the upgrade to get the iPhone apps that came alongside 1.1.3 (Mail, Notes, Google Maps, Weather, Stocks) you'll have to pay $19.99 to get them. The system update to 1.1.3 was free, the applications were extra. There may be another charge in June to get the App Store too.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

There's a link on the iPod touch web page for the iPhone apps on a touch, dock your iPod and update it. The Apple apps will come in June through the App Store, jailbreak apps get downloaded through an 'installer' app on the iPod/iPhone, its part of the jailbreak and you download and install stuff over wifi with the iPod.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.
