Ok so I'm putting this here even though the the problem happens on a Whitebook. Mods if it needs to be moved please just drop me a pm w/ where you put it.

So here's the problem. I have 6 external drives. 4 USB and 2 firewire. On any given day spotlight will index them when I plug them in, spotlight will index as normal, and some will finish and some won't. It's different which ones finish and which ones don't every time. Sometimes its just one, sometimes like today it's 2. I leave my system on all day long, so when I come back 2 hours later it's still indexing. The only way to get the drives out is to shut down the computer. If I try to eject it says the drive is in use.

I called Applecare and they had no idea what to do. The girl I finally wound up with at the end of the call really couldn't give me any ideas on what to do other than to format and reload the hard drives. Only problem is... I have no extra space to put all this stuff on, kind of like a chinese puzzle box.

Any ideas? Someone mentioned there's a spotlight file on the hdd's but I haven't seen it.

Thanks guys,
Bishop
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Something is wrong with Spotlight. It should never take that long after the initial indexing. Try adjusting the Spotlight settings to not index these external drives or there must be a way to completely reset Spotlight indexing. Search the forums for that.

Could be a case of corrupted Spotlight indices.

Try Spotless information page to delete the old indices and re-index those drives.
