I have a Rev A 17" powerbook, which has just developed a small cluster of pixelated bright blue lines about a centimetre long on the left hand side of the screen.

I'm thinking this is very bad.

Any suggestions / helpful advice / sympathy?

That would happen if there's a bad connection somewhere between the video system's interface and the pixels in the display. You have to remember that every pixel on the screen is made up of three distinct elements, each of which have their own row/column address.

LCD screens are incredibly precise devices. As soon as one of those connections starts becoming wonky, you see pixels do things that they shouldn't.
