I purchased an iMac yesterday (the 20" model released yesterday) and am planning on upgrading to 4GB of RAM. OWC has an option for a $20 dollar rebate if I send in my 2x1GB RAM modules to them. While this is convenient, could I sell the RAM for more on eBay?

If so, how much more could I sell the RAM for?

Thanks!

Hmm, I can't seem to edit my own post.

Well, I just took a look at OWC's benchmarks from going from 2GB to 4GB of RAM, it the boost in speed does not seem too significant. In real world use, would the increase in RAM be highly noticeable?

For the most part I use Microsoft Office, iTunes, Safari, Adium, VLC, Mail, and iCal simultaneously. I also use Adobe CS2 to work with photos, but I'll usually close a few apps before.

You can buy Crucial from Newegg for about the same price as OWC after the 2x1GB rebate.

Or if you're really pinching pennies, go with Transcend from Newegg for about $20 less.

Thanks mduell. I think I'll just buy from Newegg!

Yeah.. go the newegg route and sell your memory on ebay or craigslist.
Backups are like guns and condoms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

What's a good price to sell the Apple RAM for?

This may be overly paranoid, but would it be better to save the RAM in case I need to send in my iMac for service? I've sent in my Powerbook for service under Applecare a few times and while they were generally pretty good about the repairs, the last time I sent in my computer, they said that my problems were coming from my 3rd party RAM and didn't fix any of the documented problems.

Thanks!

I would keep the RAM if you can afford it... though if you were depending on it to pay for the new RAM, sell it.

I can keep it, but it would be nice if it could help pay off some of the newer RAM. In any case, it seems like keeping the RAM will be the safe bet.

Thanks for your help guys.
