Forgive me for asking what will seem to be a mornic question -

I have just installed the 1.4.1 version of darwin to a spare drive I had. It prompted me to set the root password, and now I am at the Login prompt. I am able to log in as root naturally - I am just ignorant of the command used to create a new "normal" user.

Thanks for any help - I am at the beginning steps of a long journey

Regarding the final entry in the thread referred to above: at the risk of adding to his pop-star/sex-symbol status (cf Wired.com), it might be worth mentioning that Finlay didn't explicitly advertise the fact that *he* ported the adduser script. If you do a quick search on google you get the page:
http://www.opensource.apple.com/bugs...s/2338112.html

which contains a pointer to where said script can be found. (Could be that this is not the same as the version in CVS, but if so there doesn't seem to be any indication on the bug page.)

Cheers,
Paul
