Updating this question. When I put my shuffle which has been primarily used on a PC into my desktop mac it asks if I was to associate it with my desktop computer and fill it with songs form that library. When I say no the ipod dissapears from the screen and I cannot access it. Why is this? I can use my mini between 2 computers with no issue.

I want to know why this is as well. Have you found a solution?

I had the same trouble with my nano. I had used it initially with a mac and then wanted to add songs to it from our PC. But when I connected it to the PC it said that I needed to format it which would have deleted all my music.
I did some searching on the internet and came across macDrive 6 which solved all my problems.
Hope this works for you too

in itunes, go to itunes prefs, than to ipod than select your ipod shuffle, than click enable disk use.
after your done it should stay on the desktop, you can set it to how many songs/how much data you want on the shuffle. be sure though to disconnect the shuffle before taking it out of the computer. itll screw the shuffle up if done too much, and you can lose your data. trust me, i know
