Modem problem on a Performa

I have a Performa 6360. I just installed OS 9.1 on it and now I cannot get my internal modem to work. I've tried installing practically every modem listed, but when I try to dial up using Remote Access, I continue to receive an error message pointing back to the modem.
Any suggestions? Thank you

Hey Buck,,
Try running a disk utility like techtool pro, disk warrior, or Norton utilities. Sometimes when you do an upgrade, you things get corrupted. Also try throwing away your modem prefs.

I initialized the hard disk before installing OS 9.1, so there shouldn't be any "old" preferences from the previous versions, but I'll certainly check into that. Thanks, Dave

Here's the message: "The modem is not responding properly. Reset the modem, check it's connections, and check that the correct port and modem type are selected in the Modem control panel."
I've checked into all those things. I am wondering whether OS 9.1 is "too much" program for my older Mac (Performa 6360). Plus, I cannot remember the type of internal modem I have and I no longer have the operating manual that came with that computer (I bought it back in '97). Is there a way of finding out?

Hey Buck,
According to <a href="http://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_performa/stats/mac_performa_6360_160.html" target="_blank">Everymac</a> your machine only supports up to 9.0. According to <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112379" target="_blank">Apple </a> , it only supports up to 8.0. I would tend to think that maybe in 9.1 it dropped support for your internal modem? There might be a work-around, but not sure what that is...

I recommend you to not install anything higher than 8.1 on 5xxx/6xxx series (maybe 8.5 but I don't have a lot of experience with this system version).

Nah, this machine should run os9 just fine, just make sure it has 32+ megs of ram on it. I've gotten this modem error from not plugging in the right isp information, so you might want to check that. Also, check that the line is good, to get the obvious problems out of the way. No, os9 hasn't dropped your modem either. 9.1 should work fine, though in my own experience os 9.0.4, .2, .0, and 8.6 work a bit better on legacy macs. Personally i would use 9.0.4 on that machine, but it should really be fine either way. OS9 works very well on legacy macs. I've found it to be very stable on these computers, often times even more stable than on apple's newer hardware.

I've double-checked the isp information and it is correct. The line is fine and I've made sure that I am using the right modem script (I've got an internal Global Village Platinum). PPP and TCP/IP are all filled in correctly. For some reason, my modem simply will not dial up. I have no idea what else to try <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Also try booting with the only OS9 all extension set and see if you can get the modem to dial out correctly... if you can, it means that there is a third party extension that is causing the conflict... (I know you wiped the drive and reinstalled, but wasn't sure what else you had installed...)

Does your performa have one of those creepy Geo-Port modems?
(I know the 6400 did, and it caused endless grief for me)
If so, I'd definitely recommend picking up a cheap external one. It greatly improved the stability of my 6400 (which is still kicking in the other room )

5000 and 6000 systems love 8.6 as an OS. They shouldn't have a problem with 9.1 or anything reasonably modern.
I think the problem you are having with your modem is close to the problem I had when I took a 6400 up to 8.6 a couple years back. The new OS install does not include the modem drivers for the factory provided internal modems of the era. On the 8.6 CD there is a burried folder with the installer for the geoport modem software. I wish I could rember the specific location of it on that CD. It might give you a clue as to where to find it on the 9 cd. But the real suggestion is to go diving into the folders and inards of that CD to see if there are any hidden installers that would not be used by the base installer.
If this modem is factory, it has to be a GeoPort. Dump it as fast as you can for a nice, fast and stable external modem.

Thanks for URL to apple article. I'm going to try some of the suggestions concerning the extensions. I have reinstalled OS 8.1 so my operating system should be supported. Some have said that the internal modem on my Performa (6360) is a GeoPort, others have said it is a Global Village? Is there any way to find out for sure? Thanks

Another thing you could do is take out the motherboard and look at the modem. I'm pretty sure the Geoport modems were labelled as such.
