Do you have other computers in the network that still work with DHCP ?

Means: can you isolate if the problem is wit the network or the Mac mini ?

i have a clamshell connected by airport, just checked and i have it set up with bootp. i seem to remember having a problem with dhcp with the laptop a couple of years ago and i'm sure i set it up with bootp then. maybe the problem is with the modem. not sure why one type of connectivity is better than the other.

1. little box was made by intellinet. internet service is provided by a local company which has towers spread out through our city and wirelessly beams a signal to a satellite they provide to us. not sure what this type of service is called.
2. i take it that this doesn't happen very often.
3. is it even a problem? bootp seems to work. any disadvantages to using it?

It doesn't happen very often at all and it is a problem because DHCP was working at one time-so something has stopped working, and this could indicate that more will stop working in the future.

If I understand correctly, your broadband service comes via a wireless signal to your home? I'm not sure if there is a standardized term for this, but I'd call it "wireless broadband."

thanks glenn. other things to do. i'll just leave it alone for now. don't really understand all this anyhow and i'm sure that's the main problem. (you know it didn't cost the earth)
