i opened activity monitor and found cpsd & pap to be hogging the cpu. i have tried force-quitting them and restarting with no effect. any ideas to get these guys to behave?

cups (common unix printing system) and pap (printer access protocol) are processes involved in the printing process.

Check your printer queues for stuck print jobs, and delete them. If that doesn't do it, delete the printers and set them up fresh.

Do you have any print jobs in your local print queue by chance?

Edit: I'm slow. And I feel sorry for you tooki, to think along the same lines as me...that's a bad trait!
