I'm looking for a rar application...i wish to compress a file and then divide it in to parts at the size i wish.....i have used winrar for this in windows, looking for this in mac...

please let me know...name of program that does this...

I use Gumby, but it’s old and abandonware, I think.

This one supposedly works, haven’t tested it:

Winrar has an OSX version: WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files

Edit: no gui though

Thanks for your replies guys!

...Red Rocket... BetterZip.. Ihave tried already, doesn't let compact to rar in parts only zip, and then when i go to try and unpack in windows it gives an eror...unexpected error has occured....so this sucks.

Do you still have gumby? Does it work on Leopard?...Where can i download it?

...Sijmen... I have also seen this winrar for osx..but no gui interface....what are they waiting for?? Mac Rules!
is it complicated without? I mean through comand lines?

The command line version of rar for OS X is easy to use.

Here’s a working download link:

You’ll have to test whether it works on Leopard. It’s not a Universal Binary, so it would have to run via OS X’s ‘Rosetta’ PPC emulator, meaning it might be slow, but it could work.

If it works, note that compression is a bit counterintuitive in Gumby, you have to press the option key to get it to compress rather than expand.

UnRarX works perfectly on Leopard.
also consider Split & Concat for splitting files.

Why would you want to make rar files on OSX? It's a bizarre PC format.

On OSX, the preferred format for archiving multiple files should be tar in most cases, or zip if you need to maintain Mac resource fork information.

If you want to split a file into multiple files, use the command line tool "split".

It was a link to an app known for being a Windows GUI tool, and the link title doesn't mention a cmd line version.

Not presuming to speak for the OP, but if you like downloading files in excess of several hundred megabytes off the web, they tend to be split into multiple .rar segments. Similar thing for e-books, people like to distribute them as concatenated .rar + .jpg files. If you involve yourself in either of these activities, you’ll have peers 99% of whom will be using the RAR format as a matter of course, and be expecting you to do the same when you upload something. Besides, the potential compression ratio is better than with .tar or .zip.

SimplyRAR is supposed to be able to split files that it archives.

The Unarchiver is great, and it supports an assload of common and obscure archive formats. And it's free.

Hi again!

Been checking things out....."himself"...The Unarchiver is great, but its a simple extractor....I'm looking for a program that compacts and in parts...and in rar format

"Curiosity" ... you hit the bullseye! SimplyRAR...its sweet!!! Looks Good! Using it right now! Simple GUI!

Just one question... when i select the option to split archive when compacting, it has the option "Split volumes into:" and has an option that i like..."user defined" but it does not show a field where i can insert the value or i desire...could it be a bug? or i'm not seeing it.....

please let me know....seems perfect for what i'm looking for so far...

"mduell" the rar comand line for osX maybe simple...but nothing beats a nice and simple interface to work with...

I have never had to create archives where I had to split things into pieces and archive the pieces separately. I have no idea. I confirmed that SimplyRAR can create .rar archives, but went no further with it.
