My partner & I just returned from a trip where my MacBook served as our joint computer. I set up a new user account for her, which she used for email & downloading about 4 Gb of photos. Now she wants to transfer those photos to her iMac & integrate them into her existing iPhoto library.

What is the simplest no-fuss way of doing this? My plan would be to copy the holiday library from my MacBook to an external drive, then plug that drive into her iMac, and import everything into her iPhoto. Will that work without creating another library?

I think you're on the right track. Highlight the holiday album in iPhoto's sidebar, choose File > Export, then walk through the process (create a folder for it if you like). Then you can just drag-drop that folder into her iMac's iPhoto, where it'll import the folder as an album.
