I've had a chance to play with Quark 6.0 alpha, and there are things to be worried about. Main concern is speed offcourse.
Increasing and decreasing text attributes (font size, leading, scaling..) are unbelievable slow.
I have made two tests (on overcloked Digital Audio G4-600MHz/512RAM/Radeon 8500) and here are results :

1st TEST
I have created new document with text box, and I have typed 3 lines of text in text box with initial font size of 10 pt and leading also 10pt. Then I've selected all text that and pressed shortcut for increasing text leading with 1pt increment and waited until leading was 200pt:
1. Quark 6.0 alpha under MacOS X 10.2.4: 51 seconds
2. Quark 4.11 in Classic Mode under MacOS X 10.2.4: 6-7 seconds
3. Quark 4.11 under MacOS 9.2.2: 6-7 seconds

2nd TEST
I have created new document with text box, and I have typed just one letter in text box with smallest initial font size of 2 pt. Then I've selected that character and pressed shortcut for increasing font size with 1pt increment and waited until font size was 200pt:
1. Quark 6.0 alpha under MacOS X 10.2.4: 57 seconds
2. Quark 4.11 in Classic Mode under MacOS X 10.2.4: 6-7 seconds
3. Quark 4.11 under MacOS 9.2.2: 6-7 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Similar test with TextEdit under MacOS X 10.2.4: 6-7 seconds

So this operations are 8-10 times slower. I was going to blame MacOS X for this slowness but after trying this similar test in TextEdit, I'm not so shore anymore. But after all this is stil alpha...

Dude, it's an alpha release. Alpha. Not even a beta.

Good point. I thought XPress 6 was in beta, but since it is alpha... it isn't really representative of the final product. Let's not panic here because of alpha-ish behavior.

The copy I have is neither listed anywhere as a alpha or beta, but as a pre-release.

QuarkXPress 6.0 has been given to BETA testers, so I would say its a beta.

Quark is talking about QuarkXPress 6.0, it has info / screen captures on its site. A release will follow shortly, it is not in alpha development.

My Experience With QuarkXPress 6.0 Pre-Release
- Does crash: the application often crashes on launch. Sometimes when opening a file.
- Menu bug: 1 particular menu continues to be highlighted after a key command has been depressed.
- Can not create EPS files.

Questions anyone?

So it took a whole 51 to 57 seconds. One whole minute of agonized waiting. Argh, how do you endure the inhumanity of it all. What did you do to survive this trauma?

P.S. Isn't multitasking great. You can do all sorts of stuff while you're waiting.
