Hi to all!
I need a small forum solution;
here is my needs:
- can run on MacOS X or Linux or Win2k
- easy setup and easy web-based admin
- open source or commercial (in this case LOW COST)
- don't need threads a la slashdot, topics as here @ macnn is enough

I'm probably able to do this using php and mysql; but as time is money (well, maybe...), I would love some thoughts and advices from you macnn surfers!

TIA

The simplest board out there is Matt Wright's WWWBoard. But I wouldn't recommend this one; it's very insecure.

If you're willing to delve into PHP and MySQL, then I'd suggest phpBB. It looks and feels almost exactly like UBB does, and is as simple to set up as you're going to get for a PHP/MySQL setup.

hotani web template is a news/discussion site I wrote that will run on just about anything that has php and MySQL installed, and does use the ubb format for discussions.

I wrote it to be a slashdot type template without all the extra stuff. Its really small and simple to operate; and yes, this is a shameless plug for my program!

Do a search on Versiontracker for one called panFora. I just installed in on my OS X box here at home, and it works great. The OS X installation instructions are pretty simple too.

I had never touched the webserver before this, and they made it pretty simple to get the forums up and running.

Also, the Lite version is completely free!

I've had great success with Discus at http://www.discusware.com/discus/index.php

They have both a free version and a higher end version that costs some money. I use the free version and it's still pretty powerful. Easy to set up.

On a related topic:
I'm trying to set up a Bulletin/Discussion board for our school intranet - I've downloaded the trial version of UBB 6 as it was the one I was most familiar with from posting at MacNN and arsTechnica.

Before trying to put it up on the network I thought I'd try installing it on my iMac at home just to get used to the procedure.
I enabled web-sharing and created a 'cgi-bin' folder inside the 'Sites' folder in my user space, I set the permissions on it to '755' then "uploaded" the 'hello.cgi' file in text format into the folder.

Unfortunatly when I point my browser to the file I get the message:
#!/usr/bin/perl

# Alert! The web server is *NOT* processing the script if you can read this line.

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";
print "Hello world from PERL $]\n";

print "<p>.cgi scripts are mapped to Perl.";
I checked whereis perl in the terminal window and I have got the right path in the header, so what 's going wrong?

Any assistance very much appreciated.
Cheers
Jeff

To get Apache running CGI scripts properly, follow the directions here:

Thanks for the link.
I'm going to have to do some reading up on the subject.
