Actually, Guinness is lower in alcohol content than most other beers. One Guinness (even an Imperial Pint) doesn't really affect me.
Now, today's lunch outing, which consisted of three pints with a Bushmills chaser, definitely affected me. I suppose that much alcohol makes me an alkie. This outing was just because of the holiday, and no work was getting done today anyway. Like I said before, I know my limits. I should sober up in about an hour. (and for those of you who are concerned, the pub is convienently in walking distance, which is the only reason I drank as much as I did. Well, that and I only had to buy one round. )

I wonder if this is the right time to tell you that I've been exchanging emails with your wife for the last hour or so. Discussing wineries and which one to visit, we were. For the weekend. In a poetic manner

I drink a glass or two of wine with dinner most nights I cook. When my girlfriend is over we just sit around the table talking and always manage to finish the bottle . . . occassionally a second one as well. For going out it's mostly beer when I can get a good one--meaning not Budweiser and not served ice cold; I too am a fan of the tap-poured Guinness.
Although to be fair to those here who poo-poo alcohol of any sort, I went through 3 or 4 years of uni--my first attempt--where I was a functional alcholic by every measureable standard: I even managed to drink myself into a coma once. I didn't drink for almost 5 years during my second, successful , attempt at uni and got out, got a decent job and can afford a decent bottle of Zinfandel, Rioja, or the occasisonal Beaujolias Nouveau.
If you like to drink, do . . . If not, don't.
But don't judge the act without having giving it a good try.

Yeah, well, just you make sure I get a bottle of ice wine out of this. I was denied our last visit... I don't care how poetically you get that done!

Oooh, a booze thread. When I was at school, I drank every weekend. Not necessarily to intoxication, but I'd have a beer or something at least. Since I graduated, and moved here, not so much. I'll have a beer if I'm working around the pad cleaning or something, or while watching a game during the hockey season. Only time I tie it on anymore is when we visit the in-laws; Nicole's Dad offered me a beer the first time I ever visited and we've gotten along ever since. I think it's one of the reasons he likes me; neither his wife, other daughter or Nicole like beer so he has someone to drink with And hey, free booze when I visit

Your air of desperation here does not detract from your normally bright attitude, suave manner and articulate postings. Happy now, ya big lug?
Your wife must indeed be an excellent card player--but I think you must have stacked the deck!
Drunkenated gets my vote for the proper pastperfectpluTrogdor tense. Either that or Tankinated.

I don't enjoy the company of drunks, therefor I myself don't drink. Which makes my social life hard these days because my friends have become alcoholics over the last year. They're gross to be around.

Toasted Almond:
2 oz. Light Cream
2 oz. Kahlua
2 oz. Amaretto
Mix Kahlua and Amaretto, pour into a chilled glass. Add ice. Float cream on top by pouring slowly over ice cubes. Yum.

that sounds good. mmm.
Alcohol, I've missed you. Nothing like a hot summer day of yard work to make you crave a cold cider.
It's hard to be alcoholic if you don't keep it in the house.
I'm not making any sense, nor do I plan to.

No, I don't drink at all. Nothing. And I think it's pretty cool. I don't smoke, too. (I smoked previously, but stopped it 5 years ago... )

Not alkies per say, but every weekend they get together in someone's basement with a lot of hard liquor and drink until the girls their with get loose and want to fool around. On the rare occasions I've stuck around for these events they've just made fools of themselves, it's disgusting, and that's before the occasional puking.
I hate it.

so, your friends are having fun, you don't like it, there's alcohol involved, ergo, they are alcoholics? dude, get a grip. how old are you, and you already sound like a fully paid-up member of the No-Fun Moralistic Brigade!?
read this:
alcoholism
A disorder characterized by the excessive consumption of and dependence on alcoholic beverages, leading to physical and psychological harm and impaired social and vocational functioning. Also called alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence
i even left it as -ized, so you could understand it

I used to drink more than my fair share at Uni, but these days I rarely, if ever drink... In fact, I have only had one Alcoholic drink since January...
I can drink, but have an allergy to most beers and wines... If I do partake, it makes me feel really, bloody awful (stomach pains and very, very sick), and gives me hangovers that can last for literally 4+ days, so I just don't bother anymore...
When I do have a drink, there is only one option though... Of all things, Bourbon or specifically Jack Daniels seems to cause less of a reaction than anything else!... It's not all bad I guess
Peace,
Marc

Shiza, 26% don't drink, I thought I was a freak. Haven't had any alcohol for 4 years, 4 months and 18 days (no I'm not counting) - except a couple of tasters on a visit to Reims last year...

Step 1. Get Glass
Step 2. Get Ice
Step 3. Get the Goose
Step 4. Drink
Step 5. Repeat
some people say i drink to much... however i think it is a good thing for me... first of all it puts me in situations that there is no way a sober person would ever find themselves... second i drive much to fast to worry about anything past the next couple weeks

I came close to achieving alcoholism about 8 years ago. Got laid off from my public-sector job. Nothing to do but collect unemployment, wait to get hired back, and drink and smoke.
Getting smashed every single day was not good for my health, physical or mental. So I got my first 'puter (a Mac, of course) and found something better to do with my time.
Nowadays I'll have a drink or two a couple of times a week, and get totally twisted a couple of times a year just to keep in practice.
