I don't have Virtual PC or anything, so I can't do it in that and copy/paste.

Anyone know of a utility to do actual Alt Codes in OS X, and have the character display so you can copy/paste it?

I know about the Character Palette but it doesn't help me since I don't know the Alt Code equivalent is of the character displayed.

What Mac software needs a code? The character palette is the direct way to insert a character. If you need to copy and paste, insert the character into TextEdit, then copy and paste.

Add the input menu to your menubar (Sys Prefs -> International -> Keyboard). Then choose the keyboard thingy from the menu to find which key combination to use for each of those odd characters.

This is for a game (Neverwinter Nights, specifically) and it uses RGB values to set color codes. The problem is that it uses Alt Codes for the RGB value instead of actual numbers. So on Windows you get the funny extended characters when you use the Alt + the numerical RGB value.

I need a way to do actual Alt Codes.

OK, well if you're talking Mac OS X, then there is no such thing as Alt. Codes. Have you actually tried reading the documentation, which must surely explain how to use the application?

It doesn't cover color codes in the manual. The only way to do it is via information on their website, which doesn't cover the Macintosh version.

Aha! I figured it out.

Kinda roundabout, but it works.

Opened up Calculator, put it in Programmer mode. Put in the decimal value (Alt Code), then convert to Hex.

In the Character Map for Unicode, I can use the Hex to look up the character. Takes a while.

Now the only thing to figure out is the key combo that makes that character. I need Keycaps.

I understand what you're saying (I think). Before I attempt to answer your question, please allow me to the Neverwinter Nights developers because that input method is seriously screwy.

Here's a table of alt codes (nothing special about that particular one except it happened to be on the first page of Google results). Look for the number you want in the table and copy/paste the associated special character.

System Preferences > International > Input Menu.
Check "Keyboard Viewer" in the list and "Show Input Menu" at the bottom.

Choose Keyboard Viewer from the flag menu in the menu bar.
