Wings over Calgary, 2 - 1 in the 2nd OT!! Franzen finishes it!

Sweet revenge for Franzen!

Helene St. James' blog: NHL comes down hard on McLennan, Flames for goon tactics

Score one for Red Wings forward Johan Franzen: His attacker, Jamie McLennan, will be suspended for tonight’s Game 6, but as Franzen pointed out Saturday night, “he’s not going to play anyway.”
The following suspensions & fines were handed out Sunday afternoon by the NHL: McLennan has been suspended five games, Calgary coach Jim Playfair has been fined $25,000 and the Flames’ organization has been fined $100,000 for a variety of actions late in Game Five of the team’s Western Conference Quarter-final series against the Detroit Red Wings.

The Flames racked up 36 minutes worth of penalties during the third period of Saturday’s 5-1 Detroit victory, and their goon tactics didn’t go over well with the office in New York.

The most grievous goon tactic was that of McLennan. At 16:43 of the third period, the Flames pulled starting goalie Miikka Kiprusoff and inserted McLennnan. Eighteen seconds later, McLennan went back to the bench, thrown out for slashing Franzen twice in the legs and then hammering his stick into Franzen’s midsection.

McLennan was assessed a match penalty for slashing, one of four different penalties the Flames were assessed for aggressive and illegal use of the stick (slashing or cross-checking) in the closing minutes of play.

Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Executive Vice president and Director of Hockey Operations, released the following statement along with the suspensions: In our pre-playoff conference calls with the coaches and General Managers of the respective organizations, we addressed a number of topics – and one of them was actions late in the game when the score was out of hand. The coach and the organization must be held accountable for the players’ actions.”

The Wings just looked scary-good this entire series. Last I checked they outshot Calgary something like 158-126 the entire series. The final goal was perhaps slightly weak, but at this point faulting Kipper would just be stupid - he was the only reason it went longer than 60 minutes anyway.

I bet Detroit's hoping Dallas takes it to Vancouver tomorrow night...there's no way they'd want to face San Jose, although it would be an awesome series! And as I feared, the Sens are coming up against the Devils...I hate the Devils! Yikes!

I bet both the Sharks and the Red Wings were cursing up a storm last night. Sucks that both those teams have easily been the deepest in the playoffs. Oh well, it should be a great series, but on paper San Jose definitely loses – they can't hope to match up defensively. Now let's see how that translates to the real world!

Well chalk one up for the Sharks. The Wings palyed without passion or energy. It was weird. Also, sad to see that they even can't fill their arena for the second round of the playoffs.

Crazy game in Jersey. Brodeur is not going to let that happen again. Can't say the same for Emery though.

Logically the Sabres beat the #$#$ out of the Rangers and Anaheim did the same to the Canucks.

I still see Jersey and the Wings winning their series.

Man, did the Wings ever play without passion or energy! I missed the first period, but, from what I saw, they just weren't there. As to them not being able to fill the seats; Michigan's economy is the second worst in the nation, with the second highest unemployment rate. This state is still too dependent on the auto industry and there are a lot of people who just don't feel they can afford the outrageous prices the Ilitch family is asking for tickets. Here's a link to a good article on this game and ticket pricing. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...04270424&imw=Y

The first period was actually the worst for the Wings... Be glad you did not see it!
I know about the economy. I read that article this morning. It's tough in Michigan right now, and not just because of the auto industry (Pfizer/Parke-Davis comes to mind).
Anyohw, I don't think Nabokov is as good as Kiprusoff, which is good because the rest of the Sharks are much better than the Flames. I feel that the Wings will be able to put some past him though. If Hasek steals one game or two, they sohuld be able to win that series.
They just need to start shooting faster. They can't afford to control the puck. One timer is where it's at against shot blockers like the Sharks (ans against pretty much any team in the NHL these days). It already was an issue in Calgary, it was blatant yesterday.

Red Wings 3 -2!!

They started out like they were in a daze, but, towards the end of the second period, they came back to life!

GO SHARKS!!!

Man, both Sharks and Wings have awesome defense. I think either team will win on goofups versus skill. They seem to be so evenly matched.

Red Wings should know to never give Sharks a power play. Mwuhahaha!

The Sharks 3rd period yesterday was impressive. It's close to impossible to take the puck away from Thornton, and their cycling game is also impossible to defend against. The Wings lack of size was exposed too.
Getting Holmstrom back will help in front of the net. Hasek needs to steal the next game for the Wings to win this series.
It was a real good playoff game (apart from 2 weak calls from the ref, one against each team).

Ha, just when I was thinking that the Sharks were playing a real stupid game waiting on defense, and being pissed that the Wings could not take advantage of it..... here comes Robert yeah-sometimes-i-try-to-play-the-puck Lang....

Oh yeah, Nick rules. Simply.

Well 2-0 at the end. 4-2 series for the Wings. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Wow the 2007 Eurovision thread gets more action that the 2007 NHL playoff thread. Kinda sad.

Anyway, we are left with 4 teams only

Eastern Conference
Sabres-Senators. The Sens are the better team overall I think, but Emery still does not makes me believe.
Sabres in 6

Wings-Ducks The Ducks are the better team, given the depleted blue line, but I would not (and I don't want to!!) count the Wings out.

Wings in 7!!!

Apparently someone is either upset or surprised that the Wings are playing today, as evidenced by this screen capture from my online TV guide schedule. Take a look at Ch. 34, and what it says where the program name should be.

Detroit's up 4 - 0, end of second period!

They're playing like a house on fire! Holmstrom got slammed into the glass by Pronger and Niedermayer; cost Niedermayer 5 minutes, and Homstrom appears to be out, as he had to be helped out of the game, sustaining a cut across the forehead! Go Wings!!

5-0 now.

The league is going to review that Pronger hit. He should have got the major.

Yeah, Selanne made it count when he had to. That penalty on Datsyuk at the end of the game was an awful call. The turnover was ugly leading to the overtime goal was ugly too. Tough break for the Wings.
The good thing is right now the Wings are the better team and have a chance to win both final games. Man where is that silverlining again? :-)

They'll be back next year. They still hold the pro sports record for making it to the playoffs; 16 years straight. Next closest is the Yankees, with 10 years.

Tough call. The Ducks are a great team, but the Sens have steamrolled over every opponent almost effortlessly.

I think the Sens can pull it off.
