Man, it seems like the vast majority of comedies these days fit this mold, especially ones that star male actors... I'm just looking at this new Michael Cera movie, he is supposed to be playing a *14 year old* in this movie. We are certainly infatuated with this style of comedy though, aren't we? I mean, look at all of the actors that have essentially based their careers on movies where they have to grow up in the end:
- Michael Cera
- Will Ferrell
- Jack Black
- Adam Sandler
When do you think this trend really started, or has this always been a very common theme in comedy? Do you think we'll ever see the same sort of arrested development female movies? Are any of you getting tired of this formula?

They, meaning Mitchell Hurwitz and Jason Bateman, have talked about doing one for a while. I think most of the actors have said they would be thrilled to do one. I don't know if he is consciously being a dick or not, but from what I remember Michael Cera is kind of holding out.

I don't even know what the heck you are talking about.
What are these Arrested development movies (Pl.) ?
What is this Arrested development movie style that you are talking about ?
Or are you confusing Comedy in general with Arrested Development ?

I think besson is referring to the concept of "arrested development" (e.g., the plot of the film "Failure to Launch") as the thematic similarity between a lot of recent popular "slacker" comedies.
Edit to answer besson question: the phenomenon is not new, but the story being told from the point of view of the male character in question (and the redemptive moment at the end) more or less is.

Michael Cera flicks aren't arrested development films. They're geek-teen-hipster comedies. I hope this latest annoying looking one flops so that he learns some respect and agrees to an "Arrested Development" film - and yes he was the one with the jerkass comment that he'd have to evaluate the script before agreeing to an Arrested film.

I don't get the following of this show. I've seen probably.. 6-8 episodes. Some of them are entertaining, but I would NEVER EVER just sit and watch one on TV. Every time it's been at a friend's house. Why do people find this show so hilarious? Compared to Venture Brothers or Family Guy, I'm just not seeing the humor.

I assume you are referring to sitcoms that paint all guys as idiots in one way or another. It seems to have started with a movement toward painting "all dads" as morons-especially if they had attractive wives. Dad is an idiot, mom is smart but preoccupied, and the kids are the smartest ones in the family. Sitcoms that focus on young adults apparently want us to think that males go from generally together at 19 to totally brainless at about 23. This is why I don't watch any sitcoms; I sort of got out of "playing to stereotypes" somewhere around 40 years ago...

Agreed. Arrested was too good for TV.

I liked Contour SVTs before you owned one, and I was a fan of early 70s hondas before you were. WTF?
Speaking of which, how much should I pay for a non running but complete 72 CL350 scrambler?

Just pointing out that the gay guys are never idiots.

I'm just questioning why he says I have poor taste if a lot of my interests are now his.

Somehow you're connecting your "interest" with my "action." Very different.

I've never paid more than $300 for a bike, but I find good deals.

Your wording assumes my interest followed yours. And again, you're trying to compare you "liking" something with me "owning" something. Different scale.
