I have an 8500 that I'm trying to get running. Right now I'm using System 7.5.3 since it is free, but I would like to use something a little newer. The problem is I can't seem to find anywhere to buy copies of 8, 8.5, or something similar to that. Anyone know of a good place?

Have you tried all the online stores? Smalldog, OWC (macsales.com), PowerMax and the like?
If you can't find any let me know. I could burn copies of OS 7.6 / 8.0 / 8.5
Obviously I cannot sell OS 9 to you.
I don't see how burning old OS CDs could be illegal since they are out of publication. Am I wrong anyone?

As for as I know, only the OSes that Apple has on their web site are available for free.
This is similar to older games that are out of publication but are not freely available to distribute.
I hope that I'm wrong on this, though. I can't see anything wrong with making whatever Apple doesn't sell free. Perhaps there are people who would download OS 8 for free instead of buy 9. Actually, can you buy OS 9 anymore? Maybe Apple will soon release some older OSes for free.

Yup, you are very wrong. Legally, you are bound by the copyright protection laws that you agreed to when purchasing the OS discs. They do expire but not for quite a long time or until Apple ceases to exist or makes the software free of charge.
Try ebay, those CDs are out there if you look enough.

Haha, looks like I'm getting a copy of Jaguar for free through the X for Teachers thing, so I guess I will just go between that and System 7.5.5.

I have an iMac 8.1 Restore CD that I would be willing to part with. It is the legal copy, and not copied. $12.00? Sounds Good!
