Just downloaded and installed this, and the tabs are back where they were in 3, under the bookmarks bar! Speed seems nice, the right side of the address bar gets a 'Loading' text as well as the whirly wheel thing now.

The tabs on top quite grew on me. I miss them now. I guess I'll get accustomed to the old-style ones as easy I got on the ones in the beta.

Color me disappointed: Much slower than the beta of 4, and it still can't handle some [img] tags, even though I reported the bug numerous times.

Huh, I'd figured they would leave in the preference for tabs on top but just reverse the default. Looks like they took it out all together.

Personally, I'm eagerly awaiting the proper release of Chrome for the Mac.

I preferred the tabs on top. Made more sense and saved vertical screen real estate.

I don't get the new "loading"-box. Why is it there and why does it change colour while loading?

To draw attention to it, because the tiny spinner off to the right was hard to notice, I assume. Of course, the way they'd indicated page loads since 1.0 seemed pretty good to me.

Yeah, I’m having the same problem. It’s gone from beachballing once in a blue moon with the Beta to doing it with reasonable frequency in the released version. I can’t fathom what’s going on — I’m running it on my MBP, so I can’t imagine it’s a case of barely meeting the requirements…

It works in that respect, but it’s ugly. I really, really wish they’d go back to the progress bar they used previously.

A return of the option to have tabs on top would be nice too…

Why would it want to draw attention? The loading spinner conveys no important information to me. And if I need to know it is loading – like when loading takes unusually long and I wonder whether it's doing something – I can look at it by myself, thank you very much.

What you call "draw attention" I call "distract". And that's what the loading box does, it distracts me. And it's ugly. I don't like it.

Just when I was getting used to the tabs on top.

The entire loading-box is the stop button now.

New customize toolbar options. The web inspector one will come in very handy.

Because of the Tabs I'm now willing to re-switch to Safari. Overall it's decent. But Apple's claim on its speed is certainly exaggerated. Less 'snappier' than FF for me.

Think I'll stick with the beta if tabs have been moved to the bottom. I like the tabs this way now, and I very few instability issues.

The RSS indicator is a duller blue too. Maybe Aqua Blue is being fully removed for Snow Leopard. Notice this duller blue looks like the iTunes scroll bar?

Because Safari updates don't just update Safari — they update the WebKit framework that lots of programs use (for example, Mail is largely based around WebKit these days).

Is there anyway to get the tabs back on top? I hated them when they first came out but at the time I was using my 20" iMac. Now I'm working with a 13" Macbook and the small screen is driving me crazy. Any terminal command I can run to get the tabs back on top?

I would imagine that there's a defaults write command that can restore the beta tabs, just as people were able to toggle between the new and old style tabs in the beta.

So how to disable Top Sites and remove that stupid progress indicator in the URL bar? MacPilot can't do it and "defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeTopSites -bool NO" doesn't work for the Top Sites. Ugh...

OMG I thought it was just me. I hate that progress wheel in the address bar. I don't recall that being there in the beta version?

I'm very annoyed that top tabs was removed as it is the only tab-implementation that actually makes conceptually sense (not to mention saving vertical space). I hope to see this return as a system-wide tab implementation, and not just a one off Safari-thing.

It was, but much smaller and at the end.

People were complaining they couldn't find the stop button. Now it's much more discoverable.

FWIW: The (serious) memory leak continues in Safari 4.0. AFAIK, all users are affected. There is no solution other than quitting and then restarting Safari.

Bad conclusions on my part, or is there a memory leak fix?

It doesn't bother me, but that makes a lot of sense. I feel like Apple missed the point to a certain degree. I'm not interested in a status bar, I'm in interested in a progress bar. The amount of times I've known to reload a page or something is wrong with my internet because the progress bar wasn't moving are too numerous to count.

Nowhere as fast as the last 3. something, and more awkward. I dislike the new bookmark button, where the refresh used to be... and that's it. Now I can't even revert back to Safari 3!

There was a command for altering Beta 4, in effect, making it more like 3... anyone know where that is, or if it even works on this new 4?

I suspect this 4 is more geared to the Intel models.

A lot of the old commands that worked in the beta don't work with the newly released Safari v4.

Maybe but it's an ugly choice, the RSS is dull until clicked on then it becomes normal.

On my iMac C2D with 4gb RAM it spanks the hell out of Safari 3 in terms of speed.

Going from 4b2 to 4 final felt slower at first but now it seems faster. Very pleased with Safari's development and its present state. Thankfully Apple is really putting time into it.

Anyone tried Safari 4 final for Windows yet? Specifically Vista or Win 7?

That was exactly my experience. When I first installed it last night, it was beachballing quite frequently, but now it’s calmed down, and does seem a tad faster than the Beta.

I’m pretty much in total agreement with you on Safari, with two exceptions: I’d love an option to put the tabs back on top, and the inline progress indicator would also be a welcome returnee. Other than that, I’m happy.

Edit: One question just occurred to me — has anyone tried this on PPC? Any improvement in speed?

I did… under XP SP3. Now the maximize, minimize & close buttons are/behave (cosmetically-wise) like any other Windows app, with Safari 4 beta(s) had you customized them to be smaller than the (damn big) default value, such thing didn't reflect into Safari. So it looks better now.

It is significantly faster on my PowerBook G4 in a "wow, that is unbelievable" way. N. B. I never installed the beta on any of my Macs.

I installed the beta on my PowerBook G4 and the speed is about the same. Compared to 3 is leaps ahead in terms of speed.

Duh...thanks...I looked in the "Tabs" section in Safari's preferences. Now, how do I disable Safari from storing Top Site information? (gotta keep asking progressively more obscure questions)

I'm tempted to disable the Top Sites cache folder (adjusting permissions)....however, wouldn't that defeat the faster rendering of sites and in turn, make Safari 4 not as fast again?

Very pleased that the tabs are back in the right place. It made absolutely no sense having them where they were in the beta. Incredibly bad UI design.

I was prepared to abandon Safari to FF because of this - although the url bar is still some iphone mishmash it isn't a dealbreaker.
