I see some OSX Q3 benchmarks with Radeon at XLR8yourmac...

Which build of OSX has Radeon support?

Has anyone used that support with the PCI Radeon???

I wonder if all that might work in my 8500?

The final build of OS X will have full 2D/3D support for the RageIIc, Rage128, Radeon, and GeForce2MX.
As for which build has it now... ...as I said before, wait for final.

The 4K46 build of OSX has both the Geforce 2MX and Radeon drivers(.kext).

Unfortunately, it will not install on the PM8500 or 7500, and has no "unsupported" install option, which the PB had.

I think maybe those bast_rds in cupertino are trying to FORCE owners of older powermacs (like me) who have a fortune invested in them (g3/500, 384Meg Ram, Ultrawide2 SCSI..., V5/5500) to buy new hardware.

I realize that the average user will have a much better experience on supported hardware, but I am willing and hoping to be able to finagle OSX onto my existing PCI based hardwares.

Later,
marty

OS X release 1.0 will support Rage 128 and later (ATI cards) and the NVIDIA GF2-MX. Earlier ATI cards (Rage Pro and earlier) will have OS X support, but not next month (and not now, obviously).

Well those early cards must be supported now because OS X installs and runs on Rev A iMacs (Rage Pro). Do you have inside info in this support list or is this just speculation?

just because it installs and runs doesn't mean that it has accelerated vido support.

That is what we are really talking about here.

try playing an OpenGL game on there like Quake 3 or Oni....

Well I think the above is bunk. Apple will have acceleration for the Rage Pro.

I see your point Jeff, and logically I would agree with you.

But the latest builds do NOT have acceleration for the RagePro and we must be getting awefully close to code freeze for release 1.0.

Yes, my typo...just realized I did not diferentiate...the RagePro/RageII chips used in some of the earlier iMacs and Beige G3s are supported for 2D but not 3D/OpenGL.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!

So basically every iMac 233/266/333 user is forced to use an OS WITHOUT ANY FREAKING 3D ACCELERATION?!

I hope this is BS. It better be.

ATI WILL write drivers for 3d acceleration for their earlier chipset video cards. Just don't expect 3d acceleration for the earlier cards to be ready March 24. It won't keep OS X from installing on your Mac. 2d will work fine. And for Rage 128 and newer cards 3d acceleration will be there right from day one. There are going to be some annoying "oh, by the way" issues on day one for people brave enough to actually rely on OS X as their main OS. Maybe a 25% chance your printer won't work. More like a 75% chance your scanner won't work. Deal with it (roll with the punches ).

Up until this pint the only kernel extensions I have seen are for the Rage128, Radeon, and GeForce2MX ... maybe they are holding back, but why? It will come eventually, its probably just not a top priority right now.

As long as it's not *never* there, it's okay...but I do think they'll have it by March 24.

It *is* a high priority. Mac OS X must run full-featured on every supported machine, and they say they support everything back to RageIIc. After March 24 this thing is not beta anymore and they have no right to screw over people with cheaper and older machines.

My graphics acceleration was bad enough before this news. Where exactly did you hear this? I don't think Apple is this stupid.

And what information did you get from that build? Did you run it on an older iMac?

I'm also Anyone by the way (I haven't changed my password to something I can remember yet).

I installed on a Wallstreet PB (266).

The base install included all the Kernel extensions for Rage128/pro and for Geforce 2mx.

Nothing for Pro.

Hopefully I am wrong and somehow they will produce 3d kernel extensions for the Rage pro at the last minute. This seem VERY UNLIKELY to me at this late date.

Anyhoo, OSX runs well on the above mentioned system with the exception of the 3d accel.

Looking forward to release 1,
Marty
