Ok, I just saw an AWESOME movie called Donnie Darko. It came out at the Film festival last august but only made it into a few theatres. I didnt know why but you will know why in the first 10 minutes (think airplane crashes).

Anywho, I loved the crapola out of this movie and I bought it on DVD without seeing more then the preview.

It is about time travel and Fate and NOT a horror movie. It is also very funny.

Check the preview: http://www.apple.com/trailers/indepe...nie_darko.html

If anyone understand what the hell happened in this movie please let me know cuz even after seeing 600 episodes of Star Trek this one still eludes me.

I JUST saw this movie too. I loved it, and was also confused about what exactly happened. Two of my friends and I sat around talking about possibilities. (BTW: They are two of the smartest people I know). We came up with lots of possibilities which worked except for one thing (a different thing for each explanation). It was maddening. Then, we watched the director's commentary. My friends were disappointed, but I liked it. I thought it made more sense than their explanations and jived with my own personal beliefs. Essentially, he made a choice to erase what he had done and to bring the parallel 'rogue' dimension back into line with the primary dimension (not the best explanation of the storyline, but you probably get the idea). The bunny and the girl are messengers to guide him in this task.

I have also tried to make sense of it but many things just don't work out.

Apparently the religious context was almost all cut.

Quick question. Why were those 2 bullies in the shack at the end?

I was wondering what happened to this movie. I saw a trailer and was really interested, but it just dropped right off the map. Time to fire up the DVD player.

BTW, the school in the trailer is my old high school.

The punks were in the old woman's cellar because of what Donnie's dad said earlier about her gem collection and people stealing stuff from her.

The director does not refer to God per se, but he discusses that there is 'something' that sends messengers and all the other stuff. Plus, Donnie kept referring to the "spear" as God's predestined path.

Did you watch the outtakes on the DVD? One of the first things Frank says to Donnie is "God loves his children". The Director thought that divine intervention was being to clearly laid out to the audience so he cut it.

Now if only the soundtrack would come out! I saw this movie when it came out (Nov?), and I've been watching for the soundtrack since then. They have releases the score in a few places, but that's not exactly what I was looking for.

I heard that getting the rights to the songs was troublesome...

Yeah, he wanted to leave it open to the reader/watcher's interpretation as to what exactly it is that sends the messengers and chooses Donnie to do this task. I would suggest watching the director's commentary. It's pretty enlightening.

I didn't like it. Too smart for it's own good, if that makes any sense. I'm looking forward to the director's next works though, i think he has potential.

If you guys are interested, I just read a thread the other day stating that the movie is going to be rereleased with 20 minutes of footage left on the cutting room floor because movie execs thought it was too long...

on an entertainong note, the thread at dvdtalk also said the movie only made 500k in theaters, but has made 10 million (!) in dvd sales!!!!

Amazing film.....

Hmm, hopefully it won't just be the deleted scenes edited back in... (they were on the first DVD) Though it sounds like this is different.

I loved this movie. I especially liked the remix of Mad World that Tears For Fears did for the movie. It is so much better then their original album version.

Except that Tears for Fears didn't do it. It's just that someone played Richard Kelly the song and he fell in love with the lyrics, and I think it's also been said that they didn't have enough money to buy rights to the entire song, just the lyrics. Anyway, the Gary Jules version fits the film so much better, and the lyrics are pretty eery.

Anyway yeah, I liked this too. It wasn't afraid to take the position of NOT HOLDING YOUR BLOODY HAND THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH, which was refreshing to say the least.

SPOILER

You should watch the movie again. He needed to stay in bed and let himself die because it was "God's plan" or destiny or whatever. It was because he followed Frank the first time that the fabric of the world started to deteriorate, thus the ending of the world after 28 days or whatever the time period was.

It was Donnie's destiny to die. God just showed him that if he didn't die, what will happen to other around him. God showed him "he didn't have to die alone."

I can't believe we had to wait over two years to have this movie released on DVD in Australia

And no - it wasn't God's plan for him to go back in time to die. He somehow knew how to go back in time from reading the old woman's book and (unfortuantely for him) he chose to return to a point in time that would kill him so that the person he loved would live.

Sounds cliched but when you truely love someone intensely and they die you would give anything to have them back again. Two years ago a very dear friend died from stomach cancer. I am normally a no-nonesense person - don't believe in God or reincarnation or afterlife but I refused to believe she had died for over a month. I even refused to go to the funeral. I guess I didn't want to let go.

Donnie gave his life so his girlfriend would live.

so now the question is when does the directors cut come out on dvd?? I know the movie got re-released at the end of July, but I don't think it ever came out in our city, or I just missed it...

Hopefully by Christmas time?
