Can anyone speak to how good or bad the SR80's sound hooked directly up to an iPod? In other words, will I be able to get decent range with the SR80's if I don't also invest in a headphone amp?

Side question: is the built-in headphone jack on G4 and G5s towers any more powerful than the iPod's?

Thanks,
-n

You're gonna need an amp to get good bass.

I disagree completely. I use the SR-80's with my iPod quite often and think it sounds great. I tested both the SR-60's and the SR-80's with my iPod before chosing the 80's, so I have experience with both. There isn't a huge difference between the two, and seeing how the prices are really not that much difference, I just went with the SR-80's and am very happy with them.

i have the grado sr-60 which i use with my ipod. they sound great directly connected to the ipod, no amp necessary. i'd encode lossless before considering an amp.

I have/had SR60, 80, 125, 325 and an old HP-1. IMO 60 and 325 are the best for the money. Since they are open, 60 and 80 are the same unless you are inside a room by yourself.

Yeah. Get the SR-60s and don't worry about an amp. They're very efficient headphones and sound louder then my old Sennheiser's at an equivilent volume setting.

I just wish they had the same sexy smooth white and metallic finish as the iPod. Although, I like the old school look as well.

My impression is that the Grados is not the best choice for the basslover.

Agreed. Grados are great if you have eclectic music taste -- if you listen to classical, jazz, electronic, rock, etc...

But if most of your music is bass-driven, go with Sennheiser.
"You rise," he said, "like Aurora."
