some of you stopped in your tracks when you read that huh? i bet some of you even started reaching for your guns. well once again its time for me to format and reinstall windows on my tower. what was wrong with it? nothing really...i just like to format and reinstall every once in a while cuz im anal about having a clean system. besides, i got my G4 Ti PowerBook so i figure ill be using this more and i got my linux box set up to be a router/server so i dont need the win2k box doing that. the only clean way to make sure every program is removed in windows...format. so im formatting. i should be up and running in 45 minutes total. here we go! wheeeee!

fobside,
You're weird.
But I'm starting to like the idea of Linux. I might add a partition and install LinuxPPC. Or get VirtualPC and install a Linux system. I'm using OS X but I'm seeing a new interest in Linux. Especially since IBM jumped onboard. Maybe it's a new career path.

Have you tried it? It's just that at work the IS guys are getting into Linux and I'd like to hold my own with them. But maybe I need to convince them that OS X is the way. The thing is that Linux is basically free. One guy used to program NeXT. He may be the most apt to change.

If you're going to learn Linux, you SHOULD use command-line only. I stopped putting X Windows on my server all-together because it was faster to do stuff via the command line (once you know what you're doing).
You don't really learn anything in X Windows.

The main Linux guy at work IS trying to teach me to use CLI more in Windows. Not that he nor I think that Windows is the be all, end all of OSes.

Make sure you close all your unused/unneeded ports. Some of my friends have installed linux on an old peecee and put it in the corner or closet to serve as routers/file servers/etc and don't realize that as powerful as *nix is - it's about as open as windows 95 when it comes to security out of the box.
check out /etc/services for some info
Personally i like to telnet to TCP/UDP port 17 while they're watching me show them that they forgot to stop listening on all the damn ports..
For a kick.. edit your /etc/quotes file and leave port 17 open for us.
