Which is more important? Success in what you do; or success in who you are?

It's a question that I've been thinking about this holiday season. Having been here long enough to get a basic idea of many members' personalities, I'd be curious to know your answers and why. I'll answer after a few replies so as not to pollute the sample. Discuss and Happy Holidays.

Indeed. If what you do is not a part of who you are; what good can come out of it?

Once again - indeed. But what is success? I know I'm successful in many areas, but I know a lot of people's definition of success isn't compatible with mine. I think the absolute key to real success is being able to project your own definition of success into other peoples minds. Ultimately, success is defined by your own faith in yourself and in what you're doing. And the absolute opposite of success is feeling inferior because you're not living up to someones else's defintion of success.

That question should be easy. Haven't you ever known someone who was very good at what they do but not a good person? That's what I mean.

We all make efforts (I hope) to be better people but I don't agree with the notion that success in what you do = success in who you are.

As for me, I think success in who I am is more important. What I do may be part of that, but I consider the person I am at the end of the day...the way I conduct myself with people...the way treat loved ones, strangers, myself...are all more important than professional success.

what does 'being successful at who you are' necessarily have to do with being a 'good person'? - i've met quite a few people in my life who were very successful at being complete and total assholes (my definition).

as to being successful 'at what you do'? that's all wish fulfillment to me(and very individualistic). if at the end of the day you're truly 'happy' with a glass of water and a piece of bread, you're a successful person.

if, otoh, you're goal is to have 2 houses, 4 kids, a high position in a company, and you are bitter because you haven't reached that goal, imo, you are not successful at all.

and unless you know the meaning of life, my claim stands.
