So the new Core systems have just been released at $279. It is worth the price cut or should I spring for the next one up at $349? (or *gasp...the Elite at 449?)
I could save a little and pick up the Elite but I just wanted to see if the Core was really a bargain or just an empty box.

The core sucks because it has no hard drive. If you want to save your games, you'll need either a memory card or a hard drive. The extra cash spent on the Premium version nets you the hard drive and a wireless controller - you'd have to spend $130 to get those by themselves.

, I think you should go for the next model up, unless you really like the colours of the elite, and the exclusiveness and the bigger harddrive. Id choose the elite personally, mainly because the colour fits in with everything else in my room, haha.

You at least need the $350 one. Just be aware you'll be shipping it away for a few weeks in a matter of months (or in my case, less than a month). Mine still isn't back.

Not necessarily. New machines have the new cooling units.
Also, I've had one since November of last year with zero issues.

Mine was brand new a little over a month ago. It wasn't a heat issue, either. It started working improperly after the first few days I had it (it might have been turned on a total of 10 hours at that point, in 2-hour increments) and got progressively worse until I was forced to ship it out.

Product replacement plan, no shipping at all. I recommend paying the extra 60 bucks so you can get a brand-new unit if yours fails.
My second 360 is whisper quiet and hasn't hiccuped yet, my old one died after 6 months of regular use.
Get the better one, I heard (here somewhere I think) that the core system can't do 1080i games (like Lost Planet). I don't download movies or demos and my 20 GB drive is already half full....screw the base system.

I doubt anyone is going to fall for something that lame.
If PS3 had Halo 3 I'd buy it, but it doesn't and that's why I own a 360.

Not true. I have a core, but only because I got it for $100, and with the $100 hard drive it was still cheaper than the $399 premium system.
Also, just buy the unit from Costco. If it ever breaks you can return it there for a full refund, no matter how long ago you bought it.
