My dog has been missing since yesterday afternoon. This is making me rather blue. He's got a collar on with my mobile number so if someone has found him, I suppose they don't want to give him back.

He's a really good dog.

I'm not sure why I'm posting here about this. I guess I'm looking for some kind of catharsis.

Sorry about your dog, hope you get him back.

I know how it feels to 'lose' a pet, just had to put my cat down about a month ago. They really are missed a lot when you don't have them by your side.

Dave is home! He got caught in a snare put down for foxes and a grounds keeper found him and brought him home.

Dave is basically free-range. We live in the middle of nowhere and he wanders a bit but has aways come back. I know where the snares are now (hoping he does too and stays away)- around pheasant pens back in the woods. He's never gone after pheasants- I'm guessing he chased a rabbit in to it.

Here he is- exhausted but relieved to be home.

We live in an old keeper's cottage back in the woods on an old estate that is now a charitable trust. (Our house is at the arrow)

He, along with a bunch of other dogs in the area have unfettered access- although I'm reconsidering this now. He's been fine for two years though, and there are about six other dogs in the area the roam as well- but I have to admit it scares be a bit now. We'll see.

Where we live, unaccompanied dogs have been known to get shot at. Worrying deer and all that.

I suppose I'm glad I don't live there. Around here, almost all the deer we have are muntjacs, an "invasive" species that most everyone would be happy to have worried out of existence. About the only people fond of them are those that have the shooting rights to clear them out. No such rights exist on our properties and the only shooting is of pheasants- and only when they are flying. Dave's an awesome dog, but can't fly.

These types of stories tug at my heart. Glad that he came home safe and sound! Dogs learn by conditioning so he's probably learned his lesson on this one.

Wish I'd found him for you. Figuring out how to ship a live pet back to the UK would be almost as interesting as figuring out how he made it to California.

Dave is a great name for a dog- but we can't take credit- he's a rescue that came pre-named. A few more Dave action shots- he's back to his form this morning- 100% terrier.

What kind of snare?

I agree- I hate the damn thing- but when we got him, we went to the pet store and it was the only design that was small enough to not look ridiculous on him but could fit 3 lines (name, my and my wife's mobile numbers). I don't think about it much any more, but now that you have mentioned it, I think I may find him a different one. It's just kind of dumb.

I don't know what kind it's called- looked kind of like this:

The only injuries are a small scratch where the snare cut against his tummy and a clearly sore leg- but that's already cleared up.

for smaller dogs; the "in" thing around here is just a collar that has the name/phone stitched into. no tag.

An embroidered collar is a good option-unless you have a lot of info that needs to be provided. Our dogs have Lupine-brand collars, which are guaranteed for life, "even if chewed" (and we've gotten collars replaced by them because of that!). But we found round tags that take small engraving (there's a machine at PetSmart that does these tags), so both dogs have round tags with phone numbers, name, etc. on them. Oh, and all of our pets are chipped, which helps if they're turned over to a vet or animal control.

That's just what I was thinking about since you shamed me- he's so small though, I'm worried I couldn't fit it all in the stitching. I suppose I could put the 2 phone #s and not bother with his name.

I figure since the "loss" of his testicles, taking away a bone shaped ID tag will not likely phase him.
