Hey, just wanted to brag/share my experience incase it will help others...

Today I was chatting with a friend about his new satilite internet, and he mentioned how he got 500-700 Kilobytes a second downstream and about 30 up. I got to thinking... wow his is faster than mine now... I wonder how much it would be to upgrade mine...

So I went to charter.com and looked up the prices for my area.

"256k - 29.99"
"2Mb - 39.99"

And I was like, WAIT a second... I can only (heh "only") download at about 295 kilobyes a second, whats this 2Mbit stuff?

So I got out my bill and found:

"768K Down/128K Up .. ... . .. .. ... . 44.95"

"What the hell!?" So I called up Charter, and I had em change it. Now I get something that is (by the numbers) a lil over 2x as fast (I get 256Kilobit up vs 128 now also) for about 4 bucks a month less. Plus the cable modem rental is half as much.

So, sorry for the long post, but I guess what I am saying is, check your bills, and what is advertised on the site for your cable company. You might be getting screwed over.

This all came about because of the "Free" speed increase that was done last fall and then was removed this march(?). There was even a thread here on MacNN about it, I guess quite a few cable companies did it. I guess they also changed speed plans, and rates around the same time, or shortly after and never thought we wanted to upgrade. They just left the speed the same (the same as it became in the speed increase and then left the price the same). Woo, confusing, but yeah, check out your bills and such! see if you can get a better deal!

I just changed my DSL service last month. I was paying $29.95 for 150k down and 25k up. And I am now paying $44.95 for 650k down and 70k up. Yes, it is more money than before, but the down speed is 4.3x faster.

Ah... broadband.

Satelite internet sucks ass. It's also impossible to play games online because of the latency.

Cable is about the cheapest you can get.

$54.95/month for 1500 down/256 up. Crappy CenturyTel DSL. No other choices. At least it's not dialup though.

26.95 a month for 1500/256 on SBC DSL.

50 a month is kind of outrageous in my opinion.

My Cable provider just decided to bump everybody's speed by 50% for no extra cost
So I now have 750mbps instead of a 500mbps.

Pay $25 for dial up for a little while with no broadband option and $50 a month seems like a steal...

Not with NTL, I have Telewest/Blueyonder. They are rolling it out area by area, The Northwest/Liverpool area seams to have been one of the first. Speed checked at http://www.adslguide.org.uk

The same here (since a month or so, with Telecom Italia's Alice ADSL): from 256/128 to 640/256 - not that much, but anyway rather "reasonable"...

yeah its rock solid. We average around 1.1-1.3 megabit. It never tops out, but I'm not complaining, 150k/s is plenty. The upstream kills the downstream but it goes the full 256kbit.

Wow, what a crappy cable company! Out here, when Comcast decided to double everyone's download speed from 1.5M to 3M, they just did it, and left you a message to reboot your cable modem, and when you did, voila, you had faster service.

Charter seems to behave like a cellphone company, where you are left on the same plan, even if now, for the same money, they give you a lot more.

I have Charter too and they upgraded me from 768k download 128k upload to 3mb download and 256k upload for the same price I was paying before the upgrade.

Edit: Just checked my plan on my bill for May. It still says I'm at 768k/128k at the same price. I'm not sure what's going on but I'm happy with my 3mb for the same price I was paying before.

Like Mediaman_12, I've just had the 50% bump at no cost from Blueyonder. Least I think I've had the bump, seem to be having wildly varying speedtest results just now for whatever reason :|
