yeah, that'd be great. i've resisted downloading WMV thus far, but I keep running into more and more WMV9 videos that i can't play, so this would be much better than succumbing to microsoft software

From what I understand, all he did was write a program that converts the "encrycpted" commands for the WMV files into something that's easily understandable.
That way "normal" programs can parse the data and open the file.

The reporters are going a bit crazy on everything Jon seems to do. Please read his blog ( http://nanocrew.net) and for instance this: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5847488.html properly informed journalist.
Also note that the VC1 standard has been pre-released. Although Jon created some patches to let VLC work with the VC1 reference codec, this codec cannot be distributed by default, because the license under which it is released is not GPL compatible (GPL is the license under which VLC is released).
