Here are your Steam Machines... http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/v...achines-specs/

A few $500 low end specs (i3, Iris Pro), mostly $1k for an i5 and GTX760 setup, some well over that for gaming rigs. They all look spendy for what's in them, unfortunately, compared to the PS4/Xbox One they're supposed to be an alternative to.

Fixed your link, there was something very odd going on there.

All in all, the more expensive boxes do not look like very good value for money. They want $1400 for an i5/GTX 760 box without display, mouse, keyboard, speaker or OS. Quite frankly: I can do better than that. The top i7/GTX 780 box appears to be $2500, which is just insane - especially when there's another box with just about the same specs for $1500. The two $500 boxes look more interesting. R9-270 is a fine GPU to do 1080p with, and while the CPUs are mostly unknown, what we know is not that bad.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Cheers for fixing the link, it came from Engadget Mini on my phone this morning, so the funky formatting probably came from that.

The Digital Storm machine, and maybe some other high end machines, will dual boot Windows - Digital Storm's Bolt 2 is a Steam Machine, dual-boots Windows and SteamOS
So, you'd run it in Windows for ALL the games instead of Steam for the Linux games, wouldn't you?!? Or buy a PC?

As well as the Alienware, Dell will make a Steam version of the X51 gaming desktop - Alienware Steam Machine coming late 2014, X51 to make the jump | VG247

This is the iBuypower $500 machine opened up - Let's take a very close look at iBuyPower's $500 Steam Machine

Edit: Any ideas what a Raspberry Pi with an 8GB SD card could be doing in there? Bottom left of the machine in the photo, the USB port is facing out to be an external port.

I have novice question here, as I haven't following this? What's the advantage of a steambox over other pre made gaming rigs? Cheaper low-end versions?

The idea is that you get a ready-made, pre-installed box without having to pay for Windows. They also don't bundle displays and other stuff you won't need when connecting to a TV. It seems clear that Valve is not putting any requirements on the specs, however, as the range is very wide.

Pre-built gaming computers tend to be crazy expensive for what you get. I had some hope that we'd get boxes that were balanced for 1080p gaming and nothing more at about $500, but that seems to be hoping for a little much.

It looked like that garbage that tynt pushes. Tynt is a company that hijacks the copy/paste function, so if you select something on a webpage, it also adds a bit of attribution along with what you decided to copy. Most likely you selected a link and copied it, then moved to the forum window, selected what you wanted to anchor the link on, clicked the little chain link button and pasted. If you do that, tynt's little pollution creeps in and wrecks stuff. Tynt can DIAF.

That's... not very powerful. The R5-250 is Oland, a weak card designed for cheap laptops and not anywhere near what you need to game. The 260X they're hoping to replace it with is comparable to the Xbone - enough for 720p gaming, more or less. Looks like a good choice of CPU, though.

Excellent question. Background downloader without having the big box active? But if so, why put an external USB port on it? Some sort of emulation of older consoles?

Thinking out loud, something like the 'Xbox, Record that' command on Xbox One Kinect. When it gets a command from a controller button or touchpad gesture, it saves a video of the game and when you plug a USB stick into it, transfers the video over.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Completely forgot about the Windows part. That's like $200 overhead or something?

Sony Unveils ‘PlayStation Now’ Streaming Game Service at CES 2014 | TIME.com
The good news: PlayStation 2 game support is finally returning to a current Sony console (after Sony nixed it in the PS3′s early days). The uncertain news: all those games are going to live in the cloud, and be contingent on Internet speeds and network stability. House said the service will support PS3 games as well, though I didn’t hear him explicitly say PS1 games — I’d assume they’ll be in the mix, too.

The kind-of-fascinating news: all those games will be streamable to the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita as well as tablets and TVs, so Sony’s going wide (as it should).
If I heard House right, Sony’s going to offer both a per-game and subscription-based (all access?) model. No word on pricing, but the closed beta launches at the end of January, with full rollout expected this summer.

PS4 Takes The Lead In The Next-Gen Console War With 4.2 Million Sales - Forbes
Sony's PS4 is barreling into 2014, having sold 4.2 million units in 2013, the company announced at CES 2014 today.

That has to roughly match Wii U lifetime sales, right?

By the way, with that news I've officially entered the "extra long consoles cycle is padding the next cycles launch numbers" camp. Though maybe I should be in the "improved launch production is padding the launch numbers " camp.

Depends on the variant of Windows and how large your volume discount from MS is. The basic Windows OEM version is $99. HP and Dell and the like get a discount on it though, but OTOH they usually have to bundle some trials of Office to get that. There' also the shovelware - preloaded trials of garbage software that annoys you to pay for it.

Alienware is a bit extreme, but that's partially because they take real care to design a good system all the way through, with cooling and power that works, and partially because they have built up that brand over the years. However look at what say HP offers in their "Gaming" category. Right now, the cheapest model is $999 "after savings" - but that's with a Geforce GT 640, a card that corresponds to the Oland R7-250 I joked about earlier, a card that barely beats Intel's integrated graphics. The entire line has that unusable graphics card by default. By going into the configurations, you can get up to the GTX 760, which is an OK option but nothing extreme - beats a PS4 on a good day, say. nVidia has three whole tiers of GPUs above that card. If you don't check that "gaming" checkbox and just pick a cheap quadcore, you're out of there for $600. An aftermarket GTX 760 is $250, and suddenly you've saved over $300 by simply installing the GPU yourself (considering that the CPU you got now is somewhat slower).

Even worse, the GTX 760 you get from HP might not even be as fast as what you get on aftermarket. nVidia sells nerfed OEM versions of some cards, so it's only by carefully reading the specs that you can tell if you're getting the real deal. Selling "gaming" computers is a high-margin business for the OEMs, and they really try to cheat their customers there. I was hoping that we'd see more $500-$1000 Steambox options rather than $1500 and up, but that's not the case yet, anyway.

Fortuitous timing. I've barely been here lately (or PSN for that matter).

But still true.

Titanfall maximum player count is 6v6 • News • Xbox One • Eurogamer.net
"6v6 is max player count," Respawn chief Vince Zampella tweeted last night. "Turned out to be the best balance with AI for us."
"Vince is right - we tried a huge amount of playercounts (all the way down to 1v1 and up quite high) and designed the maps, gameplay mechanics, and entire experience around which played best. If anyone wants to chase the numbers game, perhaps we're not the experience they're after? I dunno.

"And FYI, for amount of stuff happening at once in a map you'll be hard pressed to find a game that keeps the action higher. I literally have to stop playing every few rounds because my heart just can't take it some times. Remember, you can get out of your Titan and let it roam on AI mode - meaning there can be 12 Pilots wallrunning around, 12 Titans stomping below, and dozens of AI doing their thing."
I'm a little surprised, but should I be? Bigger ≠ better, afterall.

Nintendo explains why Super Mario 3D World didn’t have online multiplayer | VG247
Super Mario 3D World producer Yoshiaki Koizumi has explained why the critically-acclaimed Wii U romp doesn’t feature online multiplayer. Can you guess why?

Speaking with Game Informer, Koizumi explained, “We’ve been testing online multiplayer since the days of Super Mario Galaxy, but with this title we really wanted to deliver an experience that you can share with family, friends, or your boyfriend or girlfriend in the same place like you did with the original NES. We really want players to have fun in front of the TV, talking while they help each other out or get in each other’s way.”
This is the same tired excuse they always trot out and blithely ignores that you can support both options.

I'm not surprised on the Titanfall 6 vs 6. As he explains it, that 6v6 can really become 12 vs 12, if the pilots leave their Titans and have them in AI mode.

For PlayStation Now streaming, the devil’s in the unknown details | Ars Technica
The games ran with no discernible lag between button input and on-screen action, and while there were some video compression artifacts and color clumping from the streaming process, the 720p image looked decent enough.

Then I asked a nearby representative where exactly these games were being streamed from. "Oh, we have a Gaikai server running down the hall" he replied nonchalantly.

SimCity got an offline mode. I guess EA's vision got expanded.

Also, if you make a mod for it, you give EA rights to all your work and most likely your firstborn as well. And it doesn't seem like they did anything to improve the tiny city size.

Someone mentioned their DLC and expansion sold poorly. In light of that they probably know they don't need the DRM – err, servers requirement anymore.

That's a question of processor ability, and maybe RAM, too. I won't be surprised if someone releases a mod that allows such a thing and we're treated to the revelation only really high-end machines can support it.

Base system requirement is 2 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM and an nVidia Geforce 7800/ATi Radeon 2x00 or better. The base iMac has a quadcore Haswell that turbos up to 3.2 GHz, and comes with 8 GB RAM. That is 4 times the RAM of the base (neglecting the minor detail that the OS would use at least some RAM, so the effective increase is even bigger), and I'd argue that the CPU is certainly 4 times as powerful as a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo. The GPU shouldn't be that relevant - it should be about how much can be seen when you zoom in, not how big the city is - but any modern CPU is certainly more than 4 times as powerful as a Radeon 2350, the weakest chip that meets EAs requirement. Based on this, you should at least be able to quadruple the city size on even a base iMac.

I'm not going to pretend to understand the specs, but the difference in performance between starting a city and a full city was staggering. Anecdotal, but I think doubling city size and using anything more than low quality settings would be staggering.

So the trackpads (in place of analog sticks) will stay, but touchscreen is replaced by what is essentially an SNES controller. For a while there I thought the trackpads would go, but this makes more sense. In a shooter, then, you can map the D-pad to WASD and avoid the issue with the left trackpad that reviewers complained about.

Yes actually, I started watching some videos about it during my DayZ days, but ultimately found that without at least another person to collaborate with it would probably be an exercise in futility. I've been keeping up with it sporadically and hovering around the purchase button on Steam for quite some time now.

Thought that the game stats people might find this interesting, hence in this thread instead of the BF4 thread.

Battlefield 4 Stats has (guess what) all sorts of stats for BF4. What I found interesting is what they have on the front page for the number of players online per platform. While the number will vary when you take a look, I have always seen a large PS vs. Xbox difference. As I look at it tonight :

PC 63,030
PS3 53,571
PS4 51,541
XBOX360 42,204
XBOXONE 34,508

I swear when I was looking in December the X1 always had a healthy edge on the PS4. But maybe that was because the PS4 version was in horrible condition.

Gamasutra - Candy Crush maker King is a step closer to trademarking the word 'Candy'
King, the company behind the chart-topping mobile game Candy Crush Saga, wants to make sure its market dominance is secure, in part by seeking to trademark a very common word.

In February last year, King filed the application to trademark the word "Candy" across a broad variety of products, from shower caps to computer games. On January 15 this year, King got a step closer to owning that trademark, as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved it for publication.
It only gets worse as you read through.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Microsoft buys Gears of War franchise from Epic Games | Ars Technica
The next Gears of War game will be the first title released by year-old development house Black Tusk Studios (formerly known as Microsoft Vancouver), which will be taking over the development duties from Epic. The new game will be overseen by Rod Fergusson, a producer who's previously worked on Gears of War as well as BioShock Infinite for 2K Games. The studio is being headed by Hanno Lemke, a veteran developer with over two decades of experience making games at Electronic Arts and elsewhere.

Is this good or bad news (in the not so humble opinion of our resident games industry reporters) ?

Passably good news for Gears fans? Otherwise, I don't think anyone cares, really.

Checked out the XB1 and PS4 demos at Wal-Mart - the XB1 had two controllers but no amount of button mashing would stop the "You can have people use Skype to annoy you while you try and watch TV!" demo. The PS4 didn't even have controllers, just a video playing. Boo.
