I understand that the expiry of a .Mac trial subscription means a loss of the features, naturally. Does this extend to iChat?

If a trial expires will the trialist still be able to chat to other AIM users with the .Mac address? I'm sure I read somewher thet they can. Anyone have experience of this?

Jeez - posts appearing and disappearing at random. I'll try again:

iChat will continue to work with the .Mac name - everything else stops working.

Your .Mac name is yours for "life' so that, should you decide to get .Mac again in the future you can keep the same username as you had before. Yes you can continue to use it for iChat/AIM, but the one feature that will not be available to you is auto-encrypted chats with other .Mac subscribers (or isn't that feature available to trial accounts anyway?). You will lose everything else - homepage, your iDisk and .Mac e-mail account etc.

Excellent.

If my tight friends fail to invest in .Mac I'll still be able to chat to them with iChat. That's the answer I hoped for.

Thanks.

iChat uses AIM. Screen names are interoperable (you can sign on using the AIM client with your .mac name and vice versa).

Don't forget that your .Mac name can also be used for .Mac groups too. If you start a group, everyone needs to register a .Mac name. Once their free account expires they can still use their name to access the group.
