My sleep deprivation looks like it will pay off!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/200603...NlYwMlJVRPUCUl

"A six-year study Kripke headed up of more than a million adults ages 30 to 102 showed that people who get only 6 to 7 hours a night have a lower death rate than those who get 8 hours of sleep. The risk from taking sleeping pills 30 times or more a month was not much less than the risk of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, he says.

Those who took sleeping pills nightly had a greater risk of death than those who took them occasionally, but the latter risk was still 10 to 15 percent higher than it was among people who never took sleeping pills. Sleeping pills appear unsafe in any amount, Kripke writes in his online book, "The Dark Side of Sleeping Pills."

"There is really no evidence that the average 8-hour sleeper functions better than the average 6- or 7-hour sleeper," Kripke says, on the basis of his ongoing psychiatric practice with patients along with research, including the large study of a million adults (called the Cancer Prevention Study II).

And he suspects that people who sleep less than average make more money and are more successful.

The Cancer Prevention Study II even showed that people with serious insomnia or who only get 3.5 hours of sleep per night, live longer than people who get more than 7.5 hours. "

In a year or two there will be a study that says the exact opposite.

Some previous examples:

Oatbran lowers the risk of colon cancer. Then a new study says it doesn't.
Vegetarian diet lowers cancer risk. New study says it has no effect.
Diet high in fish oils (omega-3) lowers the risk of heart disease. New study says it doesn't.

The list is frickin' endless.

Everything should be done in moderation.

Nobody will leave this life alive. Death is inevitable. There are just so many variables.

You just say that because nobody's done it yet.

Wow that was poorly written up. Does the study say that people who sleep more die earlier, or that people who take sleeping pills die earlier? It appears to say the latter, but it's not clear. And there's quite a big difference there.

And where was this study published? His "online book" referred to in the article? I call BS on this.

I'm a glutton for sleep. I like to sleep around 10 hours per night when left to my own devices. Typically, I get around 7 or 8 during week days and 10-11 on weekends. When I was in school, I slept whenever I could, which was usually on average about 5 hours a night. But, it would be at erratic times - sometimes during the night, sometimes during the day, sometimes broken up into increments of a few hours, sometimes in 12+ hour blocks. Some 48 hour periods I would sleep well over 24 hours, others I would sleep only a couple. I always assumed it was bad for my immune system, and indeed I seemed to get sick more when I was sleeping fewer hours and on a less-defined schedule.

Huh ? Lower death rate ?

AFAIK, the death rate for *any* person is still 100%.

Well, or to be precise, 50%. About half of the people that have ever lived are still alive. So statistically, we don't even know if death is certain.

I don't get this study. Are they saying people who get 8 hours sleep USING SLEEPING PILLS live less or people who sleep 8 hours a night naturally?

Yes, but at least we can safely say, statistically, that 100% of the people who have died were at some point or another alive.

I think the study would be skewed by a host of biological and mental health problems (diagnosed and undiagnosed) that would tend to increase the amount of sleep.
Do you want forgiveness or respect?

Yeah...sleeping pills seem to be the factor over sleep length...
