In GMail, when you attach a file to an email, you select it from a local folder and then it eventually gets copied to their servers--even before you send the email. Does anyone know how this is done? I wanted to create a webpage on my iMac at home (it's running apache) that did this so I could move files back and forth without having to use ftp.

I wouldn't recommend doing that, unless you were content to tweak Apache's timeout values. You'll have a hard time uploading large files. Also, unless you want to get into installing an SSL cert, you'll have no real security doing this.
I'd suggest looking into either ssh/scp/rsync, sshfs, or afpd (the default connection method using Connect to Server in the Finder). You can configure your router to forward incoming connections to any PC on your network.

I picked it up here:
PHP Tutorial - File Upload
Good tutorials
BTW, I agree with Besson. having a Web-Based form upload is a poor substitute for FTP.
