That was more me being complete in listing horror movies I like. It's most definitely not to everyone's taste.

Of what I mentioned, you'd probably like Evil Dead II. The Thing is also a possibility. Its quality really transcends the genre.

I'd say the same about Prince of Darkness except for the parts which really suck. The Thing doesn't aim as high, but is really tight.

I'm getting some deja vu here - but Pitch Black was the only good movie of the series (and is quite good for what it is). The rest are overblown wastes of time but don't make me tell you what I really think.

Dakar, what about 28 Days Later? Ostensibly a horror/zombie movie but super good - coming from a mutual scaredy cat.

So do I. It's not quite zombie...but close. (The Walking Dead pilot actually completely rips off the opening scene.)

It's more dystopian, really. But good.

I've seen bits and pieces on TV. I've heard it's good as well, but that's not enough motivation to actually watch it.

Let me put it this way: There's enough good movies I haven't seen in genres I do like. Why would I care?

My experience is that there aren't enough good movies in any genre.

As someone who is in general agreement with you, if you come across Return of the Living Dead one day, it may be worth your time.

As I mentioned earlier, it's a (very, very dark) comedy.

The characters in the movie have all seen Night of the Living Dead, and expect the zombies to behave like that. They don't.

It was written by the guy who wrote Alien and Total Recall.

Don't bother trying to remember which "of the dead" movie it is. It's easier to remember Clu Gallagher is in it.

As far as movies in the horror genre go, have you seen A Cabin in the Woods? If not, just go watch it. Like tonight. Don't read about it or look into it. I hate horror movies and that was probably one of my favorite movies, especially since I went in blind.

No, I've never seen an Ernest movie, but that doesn't mean I didn't see that commercial a gajillion times as a kid.

I liked that as well. It has that weird "Joss Whedon's friends" feel in the casting, but I really like the setup.

Comedy horror nomination : Tucker & Dale vs Evil.

FWIW, 28 Days Later is the only one of those I have seen. I've tried to watch several of the others, but had to tap/chicken out at various stages of horror.

I have only seen a few of those - horror doesn't work for me, I rarely get scared of it, and without that the plot holes bother me so much - but some of those I liked. 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later are both worth a watch. Cabin in the Woods I mentioned. The Ring, being more straight horror, was pretty dull for me. Let the right one in is a masterpiece and a strong recommendation from me.

Sorta back on the OT.

The only option for Ant Man and John Wick on iTunes was to purchase. Same with Ant Man on Amazon. Didn't bother checking Amazon for John Wick and went with a rental option...

Jurassic World.

It wasn't horrible or anything. I had pretty low expectations. The only thing I couldn't stand was all the running in the mud with high heels.

The raptors' face-heel-face turn just sorta happened.

Chris Pratt was fun.

It was a bit like Highlander 3 in that it was essentially a clone of the first one. Except even simpler, more formulaic and lacking any originality whatsoever. Even its showpiece was inspired by Seaworld shows that long predate the first JP movie. Which of course did the same trick with the goat in the T-Rex enclosure. And the first one just about manage to come in time for audiences to still be impressed by particularly good SFX.

Its a combination of everything wrong with mainstream movies. Dumbed down for idiots, sanitised for children, includes as much as possible of the elements from the original. It added nothing to the story. It didn't develop any worthwhile characters or ask ay new or interesting questions about the human condition or our interactions with each other or our planet or other species etc etc.

I sound like I'm trying to eviscerate it. I'm not. Its ok. Its something to watch for a couple of hours. But OTOH it really does epitomise most of whats wrong with Hollywood.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I thought the set piece was from Megashark vs. Giant Octopus.

I'm trying to think of what I actually liked about the movie.

Ten minutes in I said "is it wrong of me to hope all these characters die?"

The CG was pretty low rent. Which is bad when it's the star of your movie.

"They're getting a divorce!"

The hampstor balls were perfectly clean and very floaty.

Did I mention the high heels in the mud?

Helicopter > dinosaur.

Zero character development.

Why all the stuff in the old park?

In the other corner we have...

Chris Pratt was good.

Yet I still consider the whole affair "okay". I think they found the perfect balance of "not so stupid you get angry, but stupid enough you get constant endorphin boosts from realizing you're smarter than it".

I don't get the lack of streaming rentals.

Is it supposed to be piracy? What's stopping me from making a rip of a Redbox rental?

Chronicles of Riddick, act one...

Now I understand the biology in Pitch Black. This universe is a homebrew space D&D campaign mashup of Star Wars, Dune, and 40K.

This seems like too much awesome for one movie to handle.

I have to admit, I have no idea where the **** they're going with this.

Most likely they sold the exclusivity to some other site for a period of time.

Probably progressives too.

Seriously though, the hallmark of good SF is that it explores humanity in genuinely original scenarios. Almost all films are steeped in underlying themes, political or social commentary and subtext, its just the same old boring stuff in these blockbusters. And just because its new and original doesn't mean you can't ignore it if you prefer. The best SF will make the audience put themselves into the scenarios and wonder how they would react without them even realising they are doing it.

Here's my recommended technique for reconciling The Riddick movies:
1. Watch Pitch Black.
2. Conclude that no other movies about Riddick exist.
3. ???

Sorry, what is OTT?

I probably just mean that the other movies were bad.. Similar situation to the Matrix, really - the larger story worked much better the less you knew about it.
