I really want an iPhone, an indeed, I will need it next summer for its gps maps and internet, but right now I really don't need a data plan, especially not while I'm at college. Can I get an iPhone 3G and just get the voice plan? I don't see why at&t should care. And then just add the data plan later on. I really don't want to pay $30 a month when I won't need it. I just want the iPhone for now!
If not, could I get a cell phone plan from at&t, get a standard phone, and then next summer upgrade to the iPhone, and still pay the $199 price for it?

also, does anyone know how much, including the data plan, $5 for 200 texts, plus the 39.99 a month plan, and taxes, it would be a month? without taxes it would be $75 a month, but I'm not sure what taxes and fees would add per month

No, you have to buy a data plan too.

AT&T doesn't really care about you, they just figure requiring the data plan will produce profits.

In my area I believe the total bill with tax would be around $87-$90 but I'm not 100% sure since I'm not an AT&T customer. If you become an AT&T customer now and get the iphone later it will be more expensive--you won't get the $199 price--I think its two or three hundred dollars more.

If I were you I'd keep whatever phone you have now and switch when you can afford it. Next summer when everyone who bought now is locked into their contracts with the 8gb or 16gb phone--you'll be sporting your new 32 or 64gb iphone and making them jealous!

I think it's the same as if you get a Blackberry or MotoQ phone, you have to get a data plan.
