I have a macbook, and I am trying to play a video file I have on it, the file extension ends with .mp4, but when I double click on it, it open quicktime, then says: "the file is not a movie file" is there a way I can fix this, or a program I can download, that will convert it to a file that I can play in iTunes? Thanks!

To play the file you can use VLC, which plays just about anything you can throw at it. To convert there's visualhub.

I've moved this to applications. It's more about an app to play .mp4 than about a MacBook.

It might be a WMV file. Sometimes people put in .mp4, since windows media has their own mp4 codec, as the extension and it will 'stupify' Quicktime every time. If you have flip4mac already installed, just change the file extension to .wmv, and it should then play in Quicktime with no problem.

Two things you want to install: Flip4Mac and Perian.
