People need to learn to drive better.
Driver's Ed should be 1000 times harder than it is.

In other news...
I have been trying to post another thread (about car-pooling) in the lounge for a few days. I have tried from home (Mac) from multiple browsers and from work (PC), to no avail. When this thread posted on the first try, I was sure the problem was fixed but I tried to post it again and it still wouldn't go! I even tried to post the thread with no text, and edit it in later, but that still didn't work. Does the hamster hate car-pooling or something??

Evolution theory says that the children of dumb parents will not survive. I worry more about them running into me. Twice I've had people gun away from the traffic light changing from red to green in REVERSE, backing into me. (Intelligent design is wrong.) sam

some minivans now have some kind of radar sensor on the back that senses if there's anything back there... useful probably both for safety and also for making sure you don't bump other cars in the parking lot.

Right to the point. Children don't deserve to be harmed or killed because they have parents that don't know where they are, especially when it comes to being near vehicles. I have a 3 year old grandson, and my daughter/son-in-law know where he is at all times, especially outdoors. Many vehicles now have sensors that beep when one is backing up. I predict they'll be standard in a few years, just like AC and many other accessories that used to be an option. Legislating fixes just adds more cost, without necessarily reducing or eliminating the problem.

Doofy, whoever it is, he's 13, he's spotty and he'll be a virgin for the foreseeable future. Nothing you could inflict on him would be as bad as his current reality.

Backing over a child is probably my worst fear.
When I bought my mini-van I made sure it had a back up warning system. So far, one large St. Bernard has been saved from being backed over.
I ALWAYS know where children are when I leave or am backing up. But, sometimes, those little guys can be very fast. Always be safe and go VERY slowly when leaving an area where child MIGHT be present.

What happened to driving a car based on it's performance, not it's image? If people started purchasing vehicles they NEEDED based on performance (not just cool performance, but braking, mpg, visability etc) then they wouldn't be driving such large hard to see out of vehicles in the first place.

How about a little common sense and do a quick visual check before you put the machine in motion? Airplanes run a check to make sure that things are all in order before pulling away from the gate; my guess is probably less than 1 person a year is run over by an airplane before take off...

I don't like driving big vehicles for my daily commute. I have a Ford Focus. It is maneuverable (this has enabled me to avoid getting nailed by several poorly driven SUVs), easy to park (so I can squeeze in between two poorly-parked Suburbans), has good visibility, and gets pretty good gas-mileage.
We also have a Dodge Caravan (not the Grand-elongated one), used only when we have take the entire clan somewhere, or I'm buying something large and need the cargo space. It gets extremely light use, as we live close enough that my wife usually walks the kids to school.
Why do people buy big-ass off-road vehicles to drive themselves to work and back? I don't understand. They are ill-suited to the task, more difficult to drive, and they cost more to purchase AND operate. On the base where I work, there is a man who, I am pretty sure, has no penis. He drives a big-ass, bright yellow Hummer H2. By himself. To work. Everyday.
Oh, and most people who claim they need the extra passenger and/or cargo capacity of an SUV would be better served by a minivan.
I'm not anti-SUV. They make good farm/ranch work vehicles. I also understand why park rangers use them. I don't understand why people buy them to serve as status symbols.

Because a few times during the winter I have to drive to work before the snow plows have cleared the roads (so that I can get in a snow plow and clear roads). Not a task well suited for minivans. Alas, the SUV I use for this purpose is not big assed, but it does have low range.
Most men who buy huge SUVs and trucks are not interested in their off road capabilities, but are rather interested in the Penis Extension Package available. A man in a BIG TRUCK is a classic cry for help.

If its to take care of some of the SUV drivers, then yes, PM me.
The only person I know that was backed into by a car was my sister and it happened when she was 3 or so and not by a family member. If I remeber correctly the car was something like a lincoln towncar. She wasn't hurt.
The article that the OP linked to talks about all the sensors available and it explains why they shouldn't be mandated, and I agree with them. Drivers ed needs to be much harder and tested much more frequently.
I also don't think the I need the SUV for a few times a year is a good argument. Weather is one thing but to haul stuff why not just rent one for a day and save the environment a little bit.

I bought a Dodge Durango. Not only because I think it's one of the best SUV's on the market, it rides like a Caddilac and drives like a tank, but because I deliver papers. I'm sorry I didn't get your permission to get a car I actually wanted, but this is the United States, where people don't have get anyone's permission to buy an SUV.

because the same thing could happen with a car, truck, anything. It's a) driver education and b) child education that will help this.
I put this up there with the parents who forget their kids are in the carseat and leave them in the hot sun all day, or put the carseat on the roof of the car and then drive off. Stupid, preventable accidents... that can and do happen to anyone. Which is what makes them scarier than hell.

I hear what you're saying, and others have made the same point. I agree with you - but not 100%.
If it were fashionable to drive around a vehicle with sharpened steel spikes protruding in every direction, and the number of deaths from pedestrian/vehicle accidents were increasing, would it be satisfactory to simply say, "it's the fault of bad drivers, and pedestrians who need to watch where they're going?"
I would't think so. Clearly, this is an extreme example, but it's qualitatively the same with the real safety problems of SUV's - a design that inherently creates a greater danger to others, through various mechanisms.
I can understand someone arguing that many people need SUV's and should be allowed to buy them. I can understand someone arguing that SUV's shouldn't be regulated. (Although I might not agree with these arguments.) But, given the indisputable facts that SUV's burn more gas than cars and are more dangerous to others on the road, I can't understand why someone would advocate people who don't need SUV's driving them anyway!
Which brings me back to my original question: what's wrong with not buying an SUV unless you really need one? Someone, please enlighten my naive, liberal mind.

It's not the same deal. SUV's are significantly, demonstrably, and indisputably more dangerous to others on the road. My mac is not more dangerous to anyone than a PC.
I agree with you that consumers should have free choice. But, I also think that, when it comes to safety, a line must be drawn somewhere. For example, what if I got my jollies by setting up a .30 caliber machine gun nest on the street corner and mowing people down? Hey, it's a free country! Besides, we need to keep the machine gun salesmen in business.
Clearly this example is extreme, but again, qualitatively it's the same thing - people's superficial desires to use a product that's dangerous to others. The question (unless you're advocating mowing people down with a machine gun) is not whether there needs to be a line drawn, but where the line needs to be drawn. I say, it's reasonable to ask people to not buy SUV's if they don't need them (all other regulation/taxation issues aside). Why buy into the hype? It's a pack of lies.

Not if driven correctly. I'm *far* less dangerous to other people on the roads when I'm driving my SUV than the silly little dweeb down the road in his ricemobile is.
Driver education and harder driving tests is the answer.
