Unknown ATI Graphics is shown in ATI Displays 4.5.1 and 10.4.1 - is this common on the new G5s (stock 2.0ghz w/ 9600)

whoops forgot to mention the actual 'problem' - as the displays application doesn't recognise the card, it doesn't offer the 3d override window and I would very much like to run darwinia with FSAA

Yeah, same here with my iMac G5 Rev B and it's Radeon 9600.

I'm guessing we should expect an update to the ATI Displays app soon. This seems to happen every time a GPU is newer than the current Displays version.

The ATI Display panel is normally only for their retail cards, not Apple's OEM ones.

You might be right, I didn't notice this passage on the ATI website:

Apple OEM/CTO RADEON Products
All Apple desktop and portable systems with preinstalled RADEON graphics
Not all ATI Displays features may be present. The Advanced tab in ATI Displays is not supported

So the card is supported but not the advanced tab. Darn!! Guess I had better find some patience and wait for R520.

AFAIK, ATI added OEM support well over a year ago in the ATI Displays app, which is why the override app which had been necessary to enable the extra features on OEM components is no longer in development.

OEM support was indeed added awhile ago. Initially, it started out as 3D Overrides. Now some OEM cards get TV Out functionality from the ATI Displays with a proper adatper. Some also get VersaVision and display scaling, I think. I don't have an OEM card to verify, but many of the retail cards support VV and DS, so, like the 3D Overrides, support will probably get added someday. So for those with the latest batch of OEM cards, just be patient. An update will show up eventually. Who knows when though...

Not sure what I was getting all worked up about anyway, performance is abysmal on the 9600 as it is. Turning on FSAA would just be plain silly.

If you want abysmal performance, swap that 96xx card for an FX 5200...
