After mail-in rebate: $899 (12") and $1,149 (14")

Yeah, I noticed that with interest the other day when DealMac had it up.
Seriously competes with and confuses my plan to drop the hammer on a 12" thru Apple Store Education.
Here's how I figure it....

Amazon:
$999 12" ibook - $100 rebate= $899

Apple Store Education
$949 12"ibook + $179 "free" ipod mini = $1128
add 8.75% sales tax (ouch) 1128 + 99 = $1227
minus ipod rebate....1227 - 179 = $1048
don't need "free" ipod so I could likely net $170 on ebay....1048-175= $878

If my math is correct, the $20 difference is surely not worth the ebay hassle for me, so that makes Amazon the better option. Altho....
The one thing the Apple Store Edu. option has going for it is the $183 (Vs $299) for Applecare, if so wanted it.

hmmmm, still leaning toward Amazon.

Don't forget Amazon gives 1.5% A9 discount which total up to additional 15 bucks off on this item.
And if you apply for Amazon CC, you will get $30 off first purchase instantly + $25 GC thru Amazon VISA reward points.
So bottom line is you can save at least additional 15+30+25=70 dollars makes this iBook a total cost of $830 AR with FREE ship and NO tax

I'm in the same boat. The only other thing to factor in is the 100 bucks off a new printer from Apple, if you need one.

Also, do you have to buy Applecare at the time you buy the iBook to get the deal, or can you get it later?

As well as Microsoft Office for $149.00 plus a $50 mail in rebate.

I just bought a new Canon ip4000r and already have Office 2004. So actually, the Amazon.com deal would be better .

Right, but to follow Markj's logic, above, you could slap the new printer onto eBay. If you get $80 back off your $100 printer rebate (you buy one from Apple for $139 and sell it on eBay for $119, say) then it brings the total cost of a new 12" iBook to $798 - $101 less than on Amazon.

Of course, this is all hypothetical since Apple expressly forbids this sort of profiteering.

About that, you can get the educ. discount on Applecare anytime before the original 1 yr. warranty expires. And you don't have to have bought the computer from Apple to get it.

As far as I know, the A9 discount only applies if you use the A9.com search engine pretty often. I've been using it the past few days quite often but it hasn't updated my Amazon.com account with the ability to use the A9.com discount.

Can someone else comment on this?

I've received the A9 discount on several purchases (including the previous gen. iBook). Go to www.a9.com and login with your Amazon account and use A9 as your search engine for a week or so, and sooner or later, it will show up when you log into Amazon.

I got my A9 discount within a few days after I started using it as my main search engine.
But it took my brother almost the whole month to get his applied to his account.
I guess it all depends...

In VA, sales tax is 5%, so I purchased with the edu. discount which basically took the $949 iBook back to the original price... but I got the iPod for Free* I ended up giving the iPod away... scoring major points in the end.

FWIW, I just got activated (a9 pie/2% symbol) on amazon after only 3-4 days of a using a9 about 4 or 5 times/day.

I actually have come to really like the side-by-side web/image search results that I can't get from google.
