Sound issue with new MBP

I just got one of the new 13" MBPs. I'm seeing a strange issue where the sound will occasionally stop. It will just stop randomly in the middle of playing a song. The way to get it to restart is to plug in a pair of headphones and then unplug it (restarting the system will also get the sound to come back on). If I switch from the internal speakers to my displayport monitor and back, that won't restart the sound.
Has anyone seen anything similar? Is this defective hardware?.

Sounds like hardware to me.
When the sound stops, what are the output options in system prefs? Does it say Headphones?

Nope. It says "Internal Speaker" unless the headphones are plugged in.

Huh. That's truly odd. I would have expected it to say headphones, meaning the digital audio headphone jack had turned itself on. When the sound stops is the headphone jack glowing red?

Not a surprise to me. Apple's dorky decision to crash-merge the audio in and audio out ports into a single plug is causing the system to get confused as to whether or not signal is supposed to be coming in or out.
Go into System Preferences - Sound.
See if you can force the computer to recognize that port as line-in. That may domino-correct your Pro's handling of internal audio.
