I'm pretty sure I meant, "MONITOR Spanning" not "MONITORING". However, the MacNN Forums don't allow me to delete the post or edit the subject so enjoy my goof.

I am of course assuming the hack I read about actually worked on the original 17" iMacs, as I never saw it for myself.

So the question is does it also work on the new model? That machine hooked up to a big fat display in spanning mode would be mighty tempting.

Some time has passed now since the 1GHz hit the streets. Anybody try the monitor spanning hack yet?

I am hoping to get a new iMac soon and would also like to know if this iBook / iMac hack works on the new 17" iMac (it seemed it worked on the older one)? Go to

or

http://www.applestyle.net/redmac/_hard/ibook_ex/

to see the instructions.

An 17" iMac with an extra monitor would be cool!!

It's got the same 4MX that supports spanning, so I assume that it would.

Well they both have a 4MX, but I don't think it's exactly the same.

The old 17" iMac had a GF4MX running on 2xAGP with 32MB whereas the new 17" iMac has a GF4MX running on 4xAGP with 64MB.

I don't know if this has any influence on the hack working and actually I don't think so, but for sure the video layout on these two 17" iMacs isn't identical.
