I don't plan on EVER using Multi-Users on my PowerBook G3 (FireWire) and was curious if taking out all the Multi-User preferences/extension would do any harm? Is there any reason or program, besides wanting to have different people log on, that uses this?

It won't do any harm... After I decided to not use Multiuser on my iMac I turned off the extensions. I don't see a need to delete teh prefs though but if you never want to use it again it would be okay. Of course if you did ever want to do it again the program would create a brand new pref file. On my ibook I plan on being the sole user of this machine so I turned of Multi user with in minutes of turning the machine on.

I tend to agree with you and will just toss it all out. If there was ever a real need to use it I could just reinstall the "Macintosh Manager 1.3" update.

Disable the multi-user extension if you like, but don't throw it away. Sometimes extensions are used by programs that seem to have nothing to do with their names.

For example, I need the multi-user extension to print in Virtual PC. Someone else at MacNN made a similar comment about this extension and another program.

If you get the new version of StuffIt Deluxe, you need to have Multiuser in your extensions folder. Why I don't know, but if you don't, you'll have problems with decompression of downloaded stuff.

That other app that needs it is StuffIt Deluxe.
I just deleted it... if StuffIt won't work without it, then I guess I'll stick to DropStuff (which I like better anyway)...

StuffIt Deluxe 6 needs it, 5 does not.

Seems disabling Multi-User will cause me more problems than not, so it'll just stay where Apple put it :-) Originally I was thinking that this extension may have been causing my Netscape Communicator 4.76 to freeze on me, but I found out that wasn't the problem. Troubleshooting is sooooooo much fun...NOT!

MultiUsers was one of the first things I trashed on my iMac (Feb '00) only to find out I had to reinstall it because of Stuffit DeLuxe (and who knows what else?).

I learned the agonizing way that the first thing to check if there are any problems on the newer Macs is for USB conflicts!
