I have Windows 7 installed on my iMac via bootcamp. When I want to switch between OS X and Windows by holding down the option key on my Apple wireless keyboard it does not work, it always boots back into OS X, though when I use a usb keyboard I can switch between both operating systems. My question is, should I be able to switch using my Apple bluetooth wireless keyboard or is the reason it's not working is because a usb keyboard is needed?

The reason it's not working is that the wireless keyboard isn't recognized until a driver is loaded in either OS X or Windows. Having a USB keyboard handy for this sort of situation is a good idea, especially since it doesn't take an Apple-branded keyboard so you can get a cheap one just for this purpose.
