I am having some trouble with kernel panic on a G4. It was acting fine, perfectly, except that Mail.app would quit when selecting mail to read, but only under 1 of 4 users. Odd. After trying a number of ways to fix it, I decided upon a reinstall. That was difficult as it failed or crashed, but on the 3rd or 4th time, it worked and went smooth from start to finish. Now I get random crashes and I can't figure this out.

I have upgraded the hard drive, there is a second slave HD and the memory is new, Kingston.

Here is the contents of my crash.log and I saw that someone, Gul Banana, I believe, who has some method of turning the log into something more understandable. I am hoping that someone can tell me something specific about where the problem is coming from. I will continue to reinstall, but if the issue is hardware, I'd like to run that down first, if possible.

Here is the log of the last several crashes/panics:

Hello! Panics are bad, and resolving them is good.

Well, the first three are in virtual memory paging (moving loads of data into RAM), and the fourth is in inter-process communication (specifically, creating a copy of an object into another process' memory... in RAM) which leads us to suspect your shiny new DIMMs of being pure, black-hearted evil. Anybody who wants a copy of kpdecode so that they can do that themselves can go to http://<a href="http://homepage.mac....de-0.1.dmg</a> where there is an alpha version available - alpha in that it is slow and does not do nearly as much working out for you as it could, but it's not going to crash your computer or destroy things.

The link in your post does not work. But the one in your sig does.

Gul- Many thanks!!

I have the receipts and the boxes. I'll get new RAM and hopefully that should fix things.

I was going to post this earlier, but I couldn't remember if it was you that had the software for decyphering panics.

Again, thanks!!

Edit: Gul, How do I run kpdecode?

Juan: The link has a comma at the end, that's the problem.

kpdecode can be run through terminal. Type "cd <name of directory with kpdecode in it>" (without the quotes, and replacing the stuff between the <> with the path). Then type ./kpdecode

I tried running it, but I'm getting this error message:

"No logfile specified. Trying /Library/Logs/panic.log
Creating stack map... loading modules and nametables... done.
Creating stack map... loading modules and nametables... done.
Creating stack map... loading modules and nametables... nm: can't open file: a.out (No such file or directory)
Could not find loadable module with signature "com.apple.iokit.CHUDUtils".
"
(I have CHUD installed)

Any ideas, or should I look at the source code?

yeah, saw that but when I took it off I still got a "This page does not exist". Whatever, hope the ram helps!

I have upgraded the hard drive, there is a second slave HD and the memory is new, Kingston.
I assume you're using an MDD? Kingston memory has been oddly spotty with those G4s.

I have an MDD and switching to Crucial memory solved my kernel panic problems.

Well, the first three are in virtual memory paging (moving loads of data into RAM), and the fourth is in inter-process communication (specifically, creating a copy of an object into another process' memory... in RAM) which leads us to suspect your shiny new DIMMs of being pure, black-hearted evil. Anybody who wants a copy of kpdecode so that they can do that themselves can go to http://homepage.mac.com/bananasoft/software.html, where there is an alpha version available - alpha in that it is slow and does not do nearly as much working out for you as it could, but it's not going to crash your computer or destroy things.

Reading of the developer docs, and personal experimentation - mostly the latter. I've also written a program to automate the process somewhat - you can download it from http://homepage.mac.com/castiglione/...decode-0.1.dmg
Caveats:
It's CLI-only, and has no installer or anything.
It's slow.
It requires the developer tools and the BSD subsystem to be installed (it currently depends on nm and grep).
There was a URL in the post you quoted, but as you've probably noticed, it's now obsolete.
