at 13 years old, i was listening to utter embarrassing crap. i was listening to or coming off M.C. Hammer, NKOTB. Debbie Gibson, Def Leopard and Vanilla Ice.
Hmmm... at 13, I listened to classic Rock because the stuff you quoted was utter trash. And I was in the same age group. When Nirvana came along, I didn't really think they were that great. I thought Pearl Jam was much better.

12 hours later and NOBODY has said WHY Nirvana was so great. Well, I guess nobody's made a better argument than Zimph's.
Nirvana peaked around the time when I was frustrated with modern music. Nothing lasted more than a year, a lot of sh*t was coming out of Seattle, and I saw Nirvana as yet another fly-by-night band. Nobody lasts anymore, and that's been true since, what, the mid-80's? I don't see Pearl Jam and The Counting Crows having the same lasting power as Rush, ELP, or Jethro Tull (who were all "progressive" for their time).

Having said that, I wasn't belittling Kurt's song writing. He could write a song. That is what he was. He wasn't a rock star. He was a song writer. Now one can say his songs sucked, and they are allowed to have that opinion.
Nirvana's songs were simple and honest. Something the music industry was lacking at the time. THAT is what made Nirvana great.
Had Nirvana came out say, now... I doubt you'd see the response.

Well, gold rotation for touring obviously doesn't really count.

I hear Jethro more than Nirvana, even when Jethro isn't touring.
