I have a 102.7 mb file of an installer. Only OS 9 doesn't know that it's an installer. It thinks that its a simpletext file and it errors because it is so big. How do you tell OS 9 that a file is an application or installer.

Thanks

Enter the following into the Script Editor:

tell app "Finder"
set the file type of the selection to "APPL"
end tell

Select the file in the Finder. Then run the script.

Don't mean to tromp on your toes AppleScript, but I hardly use Apple Script myself and have only a vague idea how to follow your advice. So here is how I would do it.

Download the freeware utility MuchoFileInfo. Launch it, and drag the funny file into the MuchoFileInfo window. In the Type text box, type APPL and close the window. Done.
