I don't know if i'm an idiot or what - but I can never get any version of Quicktime to play stinking VI files - it always says I am missing a compressor or codec or something and "The software is not available on the server." What am I doing wrong?

Download Windows Media Player 6.3 and DivX Player.

Ack! M$ stuff on a Mac, I would prefer to do it any other way.

For most AVI files, all you need are the Intel AVI 4 and 5 codecs from Apple. You can view the relevant Apple TIL article here or just download the needed codecs. Drop them in your Extensions folder and reboot.

Intel 3 AVI "Indeo" codec - QT already has this, but what the heck.
Intel 4 AVI "Indeo" codec - you need this one.
Intel 5 AVI "Indeo" codec - this one too.

The codecs are 350-380 KB in size. After rebooting, the QT player (and anything else that uses QT) should be able to handle almost all AVI files. The exceptions are MPEG4 and DivX files. You can get an MPEG4 codec from 3ivx. For a DivX AVI file Cipher's advice is the only way to view it on a Mac without Virtual PC. Fortunately, MPEG4/DivX AVI files are rare, I have only run into two so far.

I can't open any AVI's with QuickTime Player. DivX player opens all of them.
I have the Indeo codecs installed - prob is not many movies use Indeo in my experience...
