I've had my 5gig iPod since November, and It's wonderful.

My scroll wheel is great
I still haven't filled it up
not having a firewire port has never hurt me
I can buy a remote if I REALLY need it.

my 5 Gigabyte iPod is the best music device investment I've ever made.. I can't imagine trying to fill 20 gig... yeesh

(and I don't know how I feel about the solid state scroll.. I'm not a fan of touch pads..)

i'm itching for a 20Gb one - i have to cycle playlists now cause the 5Gb just isn't enough (i rip at 192 vbr - about 700 songs). looking forward to apple implementing AAC too.

Jeez, kids.
I got my 5GB iPod last WEEK. (from the friendly folks at smalldog). I have NO complaints. None. Well, after I replaced those crappy "buds", anyway. What to complain about? You got a first rate MP3er what is MADE to work with your hardware. Great features. Looks cool and, most important, it DOES THE JOB. 5GB isn't enough for you? Sounds like "Oh, I GOT the new BMW, but, you know, Muffy, I wish I waited six months for the additional 10 hp and the calfskin seats." Oh, the next BETTER one came out? Yeah. Like you didn't see that coming. So. Buy another. Up my stock price.

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

I've had my 5GB since December and I've barely managed to get 1GB of stuff on there. It's in a little case so the FireWire port is covered. When the remote was announced I thought I'd buy one, but then I wondered what on earth I'd use it for. And software-wise, when the update comes mine will do anything the new ones will.

Then again, mine was a gift. I'd have never been able to justify the expense myself.

Ever felt how devastatingly hard it is to have a list of ~4800 songs, and press to delete ~3300 songs of them for letting it fit on your iPod, while I see another guy in though happily carrying his 20 Gigs.

the fact about the BMW is not really relevant here.

fact is before I thought in words of: hmm, 20 gb is not possible, so this is ok

but now it is more of: well there is a 20 gig version, and that will fit my 15,52 gigs, though I have a 5 gig

I love music. I am all over it. I love my iPod. I currently have 499 tracks. I opted for the higher quality sound business. So, I have currently stored 1.3 days worth of music.
So. At 20 gigs you'd have to have... what... a couple of week's worth?
My point- isn't 20 gigs a bit over the top? I mean, so you have to go back and switch libraries when you want to cycle thru.
I don't feel badly becaus the thing is a total luxury to begin with. A 20 GB iPod is a monster luxury who's capibilities I'd never miss. 'cept for that little control doodaad. I dig that. And the case.

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

5GB is great, but won't hold all the music i want. and i don't mean to whine - i think the ipod is great and will work with the 5 gigs i got... but man, the 20 gigger looks sweet.

No regrets here. Christ. I don't put every piece of music I own on my iPods. Rather, only those songs I really, really like. How many stellar songs do you get on a CD? 2 maybe 3 tops for most Cds? Why clutter your iPod with music you only like a little or rarely listen to? I have lots of space left on my 5 gig iPods.

For now, I'm happy with the 5 GB HD...eventually, I might tinker with and make some sort of add-on via the firewire port for the iPod myself...if it's cool enough, I'll see if anyone else wants it Otherwise, when I have $$, I'll swap out the 5GB HD with a 20GB one ^_^; I don't care 'bout a remote, and use a big-ass sony headphone that beats the crap out of almost all other headphones for non-professionals
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

I had the chance to buy a new 5GB model; however, declined for the already available 10 GB model (old style)...why? Because I need the extra 5 GB over the new "scroll wheel" feature basically and I can always update the older 10 GB with the new remote and firmware update when its availabe in August.

Awesome.

And I would like to say: since I got my iPod, my Clavier has been exceedingly well tempered.
What's on it... Hmmm.
Every Tom Waits record to date.
Prog playlist has Crimso, old Genesis, Yes, a little Floyd.
Blues playlist has a butload o Delta. Alvin Youngblood Hart, Son House, Ledbelly, Skip James, John Hiatt, etc.
Jazz playlist is rife with Davis, Monk, Coltrane, The Quintet, Brubeck, Mingus, Ware.
S/S playlist (singer songwriter) Has got Norah Jones (Oh, GOD, yes!), Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, a few others.
Bach playlist (yeah- he gets his own) is overflowing with Glenn Gould- WTC, GV, lots of suites (cello, piano, harpsicord... dig them suites)
Classical has Mozart, Beethoven, Part, lots o medieval stuff because it is fun.
And a little WSB reading Naked Lunch for the hell of it. And I still got 2 gigs left. What to do? What to do?
See? My iPod is well prepped to keep me pretty damned happy for a while
Jeebus, I dig this iPod thing...

I got no fantastic scroll wheel.
Personally I prefer the way the old wheel feels.

I got no remote.
Check out the Apple Store, you can get one for $39.

I got not enough space to store my 15,61 GB, which the 20 GB iPod HAS.
Once the iPod supports AAC, you should be able to store more songs on your 5 gigs.

If you still feel worthless about your iPod after reading my post then by all means... GIVE ME YOUR IPOD! At least it will make me feel better.

Money is not growing on my back and everything is more expensive in Europe, how strange it may sound.

And I do gotta buy that Mac OS X 10.2 from that Stevey person already.

Encoding ~5000 mp3's to AAC? erhmmmm...............

Smart playlists have breathed new life into my iPod. Now I know that I'll always have the most recently ripped tracks, my favourite tracks and my most played tracks etc. etc.

Nobody really needs more than 5Gb if you use it intelligently, unless you are a mobile DJ on a round-the-world tour....

at whatever rate you rip your mp3's, AAC will give you the same quality at about half the file size. mp3 is actually mpeg 1, level 3 (about 10 years old). AAC is (advanced audio codec) mpeg 4 (new).

i rip my mp3s at 192 vbr and get about 700 songs on my ipod. i expect i could fit another 400 songs at the same quality with AAC.

(though you could convert your mp3 into AAC - but that would be double compression, which i would think would be slightly worse quality than the original mp3, but smaller file size)

Does anyone know of any sales on any size iPod? I hope some new iBook comes out and Apple gives a bundle deal, since having an iPod would be so choice...

The port itself is indeed present on all iPods. Judging from the context, I think most people knew what he meant.

Technically, AAC is not an acronym, because it can't be pronounced. It's just an abbreviation. Sorry, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

I agree that you can do a lot with a small amount of storage if you just use it carefully. My Rio has a total of 96 MB (I added an expansion pack), and when I only put on the tracks that are most important to me at the time, I often have trouble filling the whole 96 MB.

enjoy what you have had for all these months and if you truly need the bigger one I am sure one would be very happy with 5gigs and will help finance a new iPod for ya

is anyone else not terribly impressed with that ipod remote? isnt the point of one of those remote things to have a little LED screen(like the sony things have) so you can scroll through your playlists without removing the ipod from your pocket/backpack/whatever ? it doesnt look like you can even jump playlists with the thing?

(I don't have an ipod btw - waiting for a larger HD I have ~=34 gigs of mp3s and that increases by 100s of MB everyday as I have a very bad addiction to a very good 'full CD' hotline server )

I really don't need 10 gigs for my mp3s even though I could easily put that much music on it. It's really nice having the extra space for transfering large files, though. 5, 10 or 20 gigs the iPod is just a great device.
