I have just started configuring OS X to run as a file server here at work, and suddenly there are no panes in the System Preferences. I checked /System/Library/PreferencePanes and they're all there.

Has this happened to anyone else, and how do I fix this? Should I take the System Preferences bundle from another computer here, and would I then lose my settings?

Just copied System Preferences.app from another computer, but no luck, the preferences is still empty. I tried double clicking on individual preference panes from /System/Library/PreferencePanes but nothing would come up, just the empty window with "Show All" button.

Any other recommendations?

Just tried replacing the System Preferences app using the OS X Install CD via Pacifist, still doesn't work.

I also tried deleting the System Preferences .plist file, didn't work either.

Try replacing the actual PrefsPanes and/or removing all third party prefs panes tools that are installed.

What appears in the 'View' menu of System Preferences?

if that's also empty, you're really in trouble, it seems.
if it has a list, pick one and see whether that works.

Also, try doing 'Get Info' on a prefpane and selecting 'Open With Application...' and choosing Change All... then system preferences.

View menu was empty except for "Show All"

After a couple restarts everything worked fine again though. Thanks for the response.
